Gorge Wind Forecast

As I was writing the forecast this morning, we were in a holding pattern waiting for a weak cold front to shift eastward across the Cascades. As a result of this weather system, there were low and mid-level clouds as far east as Mosier. Wind speeds were inconsistent, not necessarily matching up with gradients: .11 pdx-dls and .08 dls-psc. River flow at The Dalles this morning was 115kcfs and temp was 70 degrees.

For the morning, we’ll have inconsistent west wind at 17-22 or so through the entire Gorge, with lighter wind occurring near Hood River and Rowena. Give it a few hours, and the wind will build to 24-27 between Mosier and Arlington. By early afternoon, the clouds should burn back, allowing the wind to fill in at 24-27 all the way from Cascade Locks to Arlington. Expect steadier conditions east of Mosier and gustier (up and down) conditions west of Mosier. Models think the wind will start to back off east of Rufus mid-afternoon, so keep that in mind if you’re driving; the longest-lasting, strongest wind today will likely be between Mosier and Rufus.

High pressure builds inland and offshore Thursday night and Friday. Cross-Cascade gradients will decrease as a result of this setup. The 4/3 and 12k GFS are disagreeing on what exactly will happen in terms of wind on Friday; this is a typical response to this setup. At this point, I think we’ll see west wind at 5-10 between Cascade Locks and Swell from Friday morning until early afternoon, after which we’ll probably see a late afternoon burst of 10-13 between Stevenson and Hood River, perhaps Mosier too.

Gradients turn offshore starting Saturday and stay that way through Monday. Looks like we’ll have light easterlies Saturday morning with E 15-20 near Rooster Rock and Stevenson Saturday afternoon. Sunday starts with E 25 near Rooster and E 20 near Stevenson, with e 10-15 or less in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m doing some reading right now on treating substance use issues with mindfulness, and more broadly, on applying mindfulness to decrease impulsive behavior in general. The particular theory I’m reading about says that the mind is trained by evolution to seek out pleasure. To achieve this, the mind will throw out a feeling (craving, sadness, anger) that has resulted in us doing something pleasureable in the past (using a substance, shopping, eating chocolate). When we respond to this feeling by indulging in the pleasurable activity, we encourage our mind to have that feeling more often. Although we may soothe the feeling short-term, we encourage it to arise more frequently long-term.

Whoa.

Mindfulness-based approaches to various forms of impulsive behavior (my habit of checking Facebook or looking for snacks in the fridge while I’m writing this forecast, for example), encourage us to simply watch the feeling (craving, etc) that is present. Instead of responding, we watch it until it fades. Slowly but surely, the part of our mind that’s tossing out that feeling becomes weaker through lack of reinforcement.

The interesting thing about this is that it removes the concept of willpower from the equation. We no longer fight to suppress the feeling. We simply watch it. While that can require willpower, it’s not the willpower of struggle, of desire to see a feeling or craving go away. It’s just a compassionate curiosity about mental process. That’s an advance, I believe, because resisting our feelings and cravings gives them more power. In resisting, we create all sorts of stories about our cravings and ourselves, and this proliferation feeds the exact process we’re trying to stop!

So, next time you find yourself doing something habitual, see if you can watch the process that’s driving it. You don’t have to stop yourself, necessarily. Simply watch the process as an observer. Keep doing this over time, and you may be surprised by the results. Your mind is pretty awesome, you know. And so are you. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

It’s another beautiful summer day with just a few clouds. Those clouds will burn off later, but temps will be cooler than we’ve seen lately: mid 60’s early and mid 70’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks sunny with temps in the mid 50’s early and near 90 in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

The Klickitat county Fair starts today in Goldendale. Other events today include community sailing at the Cascade Locks Marine park at 5:30, the Post n’ Pint and Post n’ Pinot mountain bike rides at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers, Families in the Park at Hood River’s Jackson Park at 6, and free yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6. There are also two Tai Chi classes today: 2:30 at the Hood River Adult Center for $5 and 6:30 at Our Savior Church in Bingen for free. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee fun run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
