Gorge Wind Forecast

Hello everyone! I hope my meditation didn’t impact your ability to play too much. It certainly impacted, in a positive way, my ability to forecast for you! First, let’s talk a little bit about why we don’t trust extended forecasts. Here’s what I wrote last Friday morning: “Tuesday looks quite hot. As the heat low sits across the Cascades, we’re probably going to see a light wind day. Models currently indicate the heat low will shift east on Wednesday afternoon, giving us a light westerly start and 15-18 in the afternoon. Predicting the end of this heat wave this far in advance is tricky. That said, the long-range models indicate some cooling on Thursday, for west wind at 26-30.”

As often happens, these heat waves last longer than expected. Today is Thursday, and it’s actually going to be the hottest day of the heat wave. Instead of 26-30, we get east wind at 10-13 early today, fading to calm wind this afternoon. Tomorrow also looks wickedly hot and not as windy as the prior forecast of mid-20’s.

The heat low is centered over western Oregon this morning, and is predicted to shift over the Cascades and eastern Oregon sometime between tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. When that happens, thermally-driven west wind will pick up. Best-case scenario is W 19-23 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles tomorrow afternoon. There’s a pretty good chance the wind will be less than that, perhaps 15-18 from Cascade Locks (try Stevenson for the earliest start) to Mosier, not starting until late afternoon.

The GFS is calling for W 12-15 on Saturday morning with lighter west wind in the afternoon. With a forecast of 91 in Portland and 93 in Hood River and supporting offshore high pressure, I think we’ll see those westerlies hold all day between Stevenson and Hood River.

Sunday looks light and variable as the heat low encompasses both the Willamette Valley and the eastern half of the state. The long-range forecast is for continued heat with limited westerly flow through the end of the week. Let’s cross our fingers and hope for change. The one bright spot is the shift to a more W/NW flow on Friday, which should clear out some of this smoke. Canada, there’s a lot we’d like to share with you, but this smoke, well, we’re not interested. You can have it back.

Random Morning Thoughts

Thank you all for your patience and understanding while I took a week off to rejuvenate at a meditation retreat. One of the things that came up for me on this retreat was a profound sadness that so many people have turned away from the simple spiritual adage of “be good to others”. My whole being longs for a world where trust is a given and random acts of kindness are respected and celebrated.

I feel this sadness, and I also feel hopeful, at least within my community here in the Gorge and the wider community of people who make use of this forecast. My heart is touched on a daily basis by the people who read my forecast, by the people who choose to make a donation, and by the thank you notes I receive. All of these actions hint at a huge community of people who care about supporting others.

Just as you support me by acknowledging my humanity by taking time to read what I’ve written, I ask you to acknowledge the humanity of others. Make eye contact with people around you, even those who might stir up uncomfortable feelings – folks experiencing homelessness come to mind when I make this suggestion. Practice acts of kindness towards friends and strangers.

When we are kind and generous, we create more trust in the world. We inspire others to be a little more vulnerable, a little more caring, and a little more free in giving away time, energy and money. Our good actions have ripple effects (for example, inspired by your support, I support my meditation teacher who lives solely on donations). We don’t have to change our whole lives or whole beings to make the world a better place; we just need to make small changes and do small acts to make life a little more peaceful. Patience. It’s a slow process, but we can have an impact. Do good things. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cool and smoky morning, and the temp recovery was much better overnight than expected. OPEN YOUR WINDOWS NOW. Temps will climb above 100 this afternoon (record high is 99), so close your windows before that happens. Light wind. Lots of smoke from BC. No rainbows except in sprinklers. Tomorrow looks slightly cooler according to the forecast, but I’m not buying it. Anyway, expect temps in the mid 60’s early (open windows) and near 100 in the afternoon (close windows). Light to moderate west wind late in the day. No rainbows. Saturday looks slightly less hot. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, and all other Kreps/Stevenson lands will close to the public on Saturday morning and remain closed until “significant rain”, aka the end of fire season. Oh wait, there is! Chenoweth Bridge in The Dalles will be closed for replacement from 8/1 to 8/30. That’s the bridge just west of the gas station at the west end of town. If you want to ride Sevenmile Loop, it is still possible by taking the waterfront path via the Discovery Center. Also closed for the next several months is Odell Creek Bridge at the west end of Dethman Ridge Road.

Upcoming Events

Happy Thursday! There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Valley Adult Center at 2:30. There are three water-focused events this evening: Community sailing at Cascade Locks at 5:30, the Post n’ Pint goes swimming at Dirty Fingers at 5:30 (bring a floating object and a bike), and the Kayak Shed’s lower White Salmon shop paddle at 5:45. Air conditioned events include free sports screenings for kids at Skyline Hospital from 6pm to 8pm (first come, first served) and community yoga at Samadhi at 6pm. There’s Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen (free, AC status unknown) and Families in the Park at Jackson Park in Hood River with the band Jilt (definitely no AC).

Tomorrow morning at 7, jogging 4 miles from Kickstand Coffee will earn you a free cup of coffee and a donut. The Double-Damned sailboat race is Saturday, theoretically, but the afternoon forecast of no wind could make that tricky. Meadows has the Uphill Challenge footrace Saturday, and there’s a potluck (10:30), work party (1pm), and tea with monks (3pm) at Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
