Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies are the plan through the weekend. As a matter of fact, there’s no clear sign of westerlies any time soon. Perhaps when the weather turns wintry, or close-to-wintry, at the end of next week?

Thursday starts with pressures of 30.14/30.26/30.26 for a robust easterly gradient of 0.12. Easterlies are in the 30-35 range near Rooster Rock and 20-25 range from Stevenson to Viento. Models suggest a longer-than-usual hold to the wind today as Portland plans to stay warmer than the desert. By 2pm, though, wind speeds will fall to 20-25 at Rooster and 20ish from Stevenson to Viento. Late afternoon: 15mph for that entire stretch. River flow readings are 59-106kcfs, river temp is 65.3, and high temp forecast is 80F.

Your Friday morning temp may impact your enjoyment: 42F. Easterlies kick off at 20mph. Get them early; by 11am, they’ll drop to 10-15mph or less between Cascade Locks and Viento with light/variable wind at Rooster. The wind continues to fade through the afternoon. High temp: 81F.

Saturday’s wind will have more oomph as a heat low settles on the west side. Early speeds will be 30-35mph near Rooster and 25mph near Cascade Locks and Viento. That should hold through early afternoon when the wind will drip to 25mph from Rooster to Viento. Late afternoon: 15-20mph all through the western Gorge. High temp: 79F. Sunday’s forecast is currently east wind at 25-30mph. That’s plenty of wind for you! Enjoy!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened motorized use for trails in the NW Area (Post, Kingsley, Binn’s Hill). Other HRC trails are still closed. These trails are closed to all uses, and some might not have signage saying they are closed: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
