Thursday. PURE AWESOME on the river.

DSC_2057
Well, well. That was certainly a nuking day yesterday, with a long-lived period of 30+ in the Corridor (that’s Swell to Hood River, in case you were wondering). The most interesting part of yesterday for me was the addition of Arlington in the low 30’s late in the day. That was unexpected. But you know what they say… “Never leave wind to find wind” (NLWTFW). That is good advice for today. Speaking of advice, I’m advising myself to STFU and cut to the chase so I can go windsurfing – it’s already blowing 31 at the Hatchery! Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

This morning’s 6am gradients were .18 (pdx-dls), .06 (dls-psc), and .43 (eph-dls). That last is way down from yesterday, but doesn’t seem to be affecting the wind speed at all, with low 30’s near Swell, 20’s at Steven’s Locks and Rowena, and teens further east. Given that dls-psc gradient this morning, I think we’ll see wind further east earlier than yesterday. So, expect 28-32+ from Swell to Mosier this morning with low 20’s at Steven’s Locks and the Rowena stretch. The Swell stretch will die back in the afternoon, and the Doug’s/Rufus/Arlington will pick up to 28-32, Doug’s around 1:23, Rufus around 2:34, and Arlington at 3:57. Kidding on those times, but they will follow each other in succession.

Tomorrow starts off with another nukefest for Dawn Patrol with 26-30 during the day, strongest from Swell to Mosier in the morning and filling in to Rufus, probably not Arlington, in the afternoon. The weekend forecast is jumping all over the place. Models seem to agree that Saturday will be 10-13 or less early with 22-25 in the afternoon. Last night the models said westerlies on Sunday, and now they say easterlies.

Out on the coast, where the majority of the crowd from the Hatchery Point is hanging out, it’ll be windy and wavey too. Expect this (north/central/south)… Today: 15-20/20-25/35-45, S swell 2′ @ 15 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/30-35/f**king windy, NW 6′ @ 13. Saturday: 15-20/25-35/f**king windy, NW 6 @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

I would love to get all deep and philosophical on you this morning, but it’s blowing 31mph already, and I want to windsurf, not stare at a computer. I’ve been windsurfing for 26 years now, and the stoke is still alive in me for days like this.

Sometimes you just know you love something. I saw a wavesailing contest on TV when I was 12 or 13, and I fell in love with windsurfing on the spot. The moment is frozen in my mind – utter awe and amazement and determination to be a pro windsurfer.

When you have those moments where your entire soul screams out, “This is me!” you gotta go with it. If I’d ignored that internal voice and my parents’ attempts to smash my windsurfing dreams (at one point, I bought gear with my own money and they sent it back and kept my money), I wouldn’t be living in this amazing place and I wouldn’t have wet my feet in oceans across the world. Most importantly, I wouldn’t be writing forecasts, another thing I love so much ‘cuz I get to help you guys find more fun in your lives.

When your soul finds something it loves, listen. It might be scary, but if you feed that passion, you’ll find pure joy. Now, it’s windy. Let’s all get on the water and shred!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I would like to point out that yesterday morning was 10 degrees colder, not warmer (as I said), than the previous morning. I am sure you figured that out for yourself, but that didn’t stop one of my friends from emailing to give me crap about it. In today’s weather, it’ll be in the upper 50’s this morning and the upper 70’s this afternoon. Nuking wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks a bit cooler in the morning with highs in the upper 70’s. Nuking wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks like Friday, but the wind will be light in the morning and moderate in the afternoon. No rainbows until Tuesday, at the earliest.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s too windy to go for a long road ride. But the trails are still there…

If you are planning ahead, plan to not ride Post Canyon the weekend of the 20th. Not only is it the Enduro, but it’s 12 Hours of Post, and there will be racers all over the trail system. In other cycling news, the 20th is also the Dirty Fingers Anniversary party, themed “Black Tie, Leather or Toga” this year. Start working on your costume.

Tomorrow morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, leaving 13th and State at 7am. If you complete the 4 mile run, you get free coffee and a donut.

On Saturday, there’s a windsurfing race at the Event Site, the St. Judes Saddleup in Wasco, and the SUP movie at Andrews. The Pistol River Wave Bash is on today through Sunday, leaving the Hatchery Point wide open for… YOU!
