Gorge Wind Forecast

Spotty marine clouds made it all the way to Hood River this morning as a one-two combo of weather thingies pushed into the region overnight. All those clouds in Portland will give the desert a jump on the heating today. That combines with early gradients of .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) and a forecast of a relatively stable atmosphere today. River flow is currently 146kcfs, and temp is 68 degrees. Due to the influence of this weather system, morning wind isn’t matching the gradient well, but also due to the system’s influence, we have wind at 15-18 through the entire Gorge.

The wind will pick up as the day goes on, climbing to 24-28 from Mosier to Rufus by late morning and staying there. The stretch of river currently under the clouds – Cascade Locks to Hood River – will slowly pick up as the clouds burn off. I think it’s reasonable to predict 24-28 for that stretch as well, once we achieve full sunshine. Conditions will be gusty early in the western Gorge, steadying out in the afternoon. Roosevelt and Arlington are going to be a little far east to take full advantage of this setup; it’s likely they’ll max out at 22-25 today, with a slight chance of stronger wind, perhaps 24-27, late in the afternoon or early evening.

Friday’s pressure gradient will be disrupted by an upper low far off the coast and an accompanying trough of low pressure along the coast. This will also turn upper flow more SW than W, leading to slight afternoon instability. Although this will likely give us a pretty Friday evening sunset, it will keep the wind speeds down. We’ll have 12-15 for much fo the day from Cascade Locks to Mosier. Depending on timing, there’s a chance we’ll see an early evening push of 17-21 from Cascade Locks to Hood River.

That low pressure trough shifts inland overnight Friday into Saturday morning, allowing strong high pressure to build off the coast. The wind may not quite match the gradients early as things shift around above us (models indicate potential high clouds Saturday morning). By midday, though, we’ll have 28-32 from Viento to Rufus. Cascade Locks and Arlington will also join in the fun on Saturday. If the sounding model is correct, increasing stability as the day goes on will make for stronger, steadier wind after 11am or so. The forecast for Sunday currently looks like 24-28, and the current GFS run for Monday is hinting at a very light wind day, a chance for you to rest.

Random Morning Thoughts

United States culture is individualistic rather than communal. Simply speaking, this means that we tend to believe that our needs are more important than the needs of the groups to which we belong. For example, we (generally speaking) choose a career or lover based on our desires rather than the desires of our family. We may even find the idea of our family choosing for us incomprehensible; from the viewpoint of other cultures, our system is incomprehensible!

One of the outcomes, perhaps somewhat misguided, of an individualist, capitalistic society is that we prioritize spending our time and money on ourselves. Despite my best intentions, I too stand guilty as charged.

But here’s the thing: there’s piles and piles and piles of research showing that two things that contradict the US model are closely and significantly linked with happiness: generosity and time spent with friends, family and others with whom we are in close relationship.

I’m not suggesting you change your entire life. That’s impossible and ridiculous and a suggestion born of all-or-nothing thinking. I am encouraging you (and myself) to create just a little more space for time with friends, a few extra hours a month to volunteer, and a few dollars (or food or expertise or whatever) to give to a non-profit that tugs at your heart. You may find yourself surprised that doing so gives you at least as much joy, peace and happiness as a great day on the river or trails. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Tonight is Post n’ Pint and Post n’ Pinot night at Dirty Fingers. The first is a race-pace ride. The second is for female-identified individuals. Both rides start at 5:30, and both earn you a free pint of beer. In trail news, everything is currently open, unless there’s some out-of-the-way secret trail I don’t know about. The one thing that is closed is the section of Highway 30 between Ainsworth and Multnomah Falls, meaning you’ll have to ride your bike on I-84 for about three miles if you’re headed that way.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the 11am dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange and $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. At 5:30 today, there’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride and the race-pace Post n’ Pint ride at Dirty Fingers Bike Shop. The Kayak Shed sponsors a weekly Thursday group paddle on the White Salmon. Meet at 5:45 at Husum to join. There’s community yoga at 6 at Samadhi and Tai Chi at 6:30 at Our Savior Church in Bingen. There’s also community sailing in Cascade Locks. You can go for a short sailboat ride for free, and CL kids can join the sailing program for $5. There’s also a BBQ after. Seems like a lovely community event.

The Kickstand Coffee donut run is tomorrow at 7am. Earn yourself a free cup of coffee and a donut by walking or jogging 4 miles. There’s free swim at the Hood River Pool tomorrow from 1-4. Tum a Lum Founder’s Day is Saturday from 10-3 with free hot dogs.

Kiteboard for Cancer starts tomorrow afternoon at the Hood River Event Site. There are all sorts of events going on there this weekend, so swing by and check it out if you have time. Cascade Locks hosts the Gorge Skiff Regatta Friday through Sunday, Stevenson has the Gorge Outrigger Race on Saturday, and Trout Lake has the Wild Woman 50k, half-marathon, and relay on Saturday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
