Gorge Wind Forecast

Three day of westerlies give way to a hot easterly day on Sunday. As we talked about earlier this week, models are often too slow with the breakdown of a high pressure ridge. They initially forecast The Big Cooldown for Saturday. That’s now predicted for Tuesday.

Thursday starts off with clear sky and light westerlies all through the Gorge. It’s likely we’ll see a bump to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River mid-morning before metro area heat knocks the wind back to the 7-10 range through the afternoon. Late in the day, desert heating lends a hand. Westerlies climb to 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles for the after work executive session. River flow: 162kcfs. River temp: 61F. High temp forecast: 84F.

Moderate westerlies are the story for most of Friday. If stronger wind is your thing, practice patience; a shortwave swings through in the evening for stronger, gusty westerlies. Dawn patrol wind will be in the 12-15 range from Stevenson or Viento to Swell. By late morning, westerlies build to 18-21 from Stevenson to Mosier. They’ll hold for a few hours and then climb in response to this approaching dynamic feature. Stevenson is the bet for longest lasting wind: 23-26 after 2pm rising to 25-28 after 5 pm. Viento to Swell also see a period of mid 20’s, but it’ll be shorter lasting, most likely. After 5pm, the wind extends all the way to Arlington with most locations at gusty 25-28. Probably the wrong direction for The Wall, but go ahead and check the iWind/iKite sensors anyway. You might get lucky! High temp: 84F.

Everything starts out fine, dandy, and windy on Saturday. Metro-area heat throws a wrench into the situation, and the wind never fully recovers. Get out for Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. By late morning, the wind drops to gusty 15-18 and stays there. Your friendly desert thermal low lends a hand late in the day for gusty 19-23 from Moiser to Avery; at that time, the wind drops to 12-15 west of Mosier. East of Avery, the wind will be light all day long. High temp: 80F. Easterlies and hot weather are the call for Sunday. Have a lovely day today!
