Gorge Wind Forecast

Hopefully you’re in really good windsport shape, because you’re going to need that fitness over the next five days. If you happen to live somewhere other than the Gorge, pack up your White Sprinter Van and come on down for the holiday weekend – we’re expecting lots of wind.

For Thursday, the day starts with westerlies bouncing around in the 15-18 range from Vientoish to Arlington. The strongest wind today will focus in the western Gorge. Atmospheric stability is better than it’s been the last couple of days, but there’s still a chance of thunder to the south and east. That could impact wind quality this afternoon, and it might not; the upper levels over the Gorge might be just stable enough to keep the wind going. With that assumption… We’ll see a steady build to 24-27 from Stevenson to Avery this afternoon with light wind east of Rufus. There will likely be wind at Rufus too, but with the current at 511,000cfs, it’s way too strong to be playing in that section of the river. River temp is 56 degrees.

A trough of low pressure pushes inland on Friday, turning the flow more W/NW than S. That stabilizes things out, gives us more marine air in the west, and ramps up the gradients. Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier seems likely. Westerlies climb to 26-30 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon.

Marine clouds deepen on Saturday enough to drop some drizzle in the far western Gorge. This pushes the dawn patrol east to the Mosier-to-The Dalles section. Clouds burn back in the afternoon for 29-33 from Viento to Arlington. Stevenson is a “maybe” on Saturday, but should see at least 18-22 in the afternoon, even if it stays cloudy there. Models agree on 23-26ish on Sunday but disagree on Monday; the GFS likes 20-23 and the Euro likes 28-32. I like the Euro.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 5-10. Friday: 22-25. Saturday: 15-28. Sauvie’s Thursday: 7-10. Friday: 15-18. Saturday: 5-8. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: 15-20/10-15/X, W 5′ at 11 seconds, S 3′ at 16 seconds. Friday: 10-15/15-20/25-30, W 4′ @ 11. Saturday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, W 4′ @ 9. Sunday and Monday both look quite windy along the entire coast (with the possible exception of the north coast Sunday)
