Mt. Hood Forecast

Excellent packed powder groom has returned to the slopes and the Nordic skiing trails, and the good conditions should stick around for several days. Thursday’s mountain weather looks cloudy in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon, and mostly cloudy overnight. The snow level will be about 2000′-3000′ all day. No precipitation. Wind: SSW 5-15 all day and SW 5-10 overnight.

Scattered snow flurries under mostly cloudy sky Friday morning give way to light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 2000-3000′ in the morning and 1500′-2000′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of new falls in the daytime, if any, and 0.2” water equivalent (WE) falls overnight. That gives us about 2” of new snow. Wind: SW 5-10 early builds to SW 10-25 in the afternoon and WSW 25-35 overnight.

Saturday brings steady light snowfall. The snow level will be 1500′-2000′ early and 3500′ from mid-afternoon on. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day for 2” of new snow. Another 0.2” arrives overnight, for 2” more. Wind: WSW 25-35 in the morning, SW 20-45 in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday looks similar: 4” new in the 24 hour period with the snow level at 3500′ early and 5500′ overnight. Light snowfall continues on Monday. It is possible the incoming system driving this snow will shift locations and give us more precip and/or warmer temps, so we’ll keep a close eye on it. IN the meantime, the next few days look really good for groomers and Nordic skiing. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
