Mt. Hood Forecast

Excellent groomed snow conditions continue today and probably stick around for quite a while. Precipitation amounts for the weekend still aren’t clear with models giving wildly varying amounts of how much snow will fall. Models also hint at 5000′ temps climbing to 1-3C for a period this weekend which could result in mixed precip. Lots of uncertainty still!

For Friday, expect partly cloudy to clear sky and epic groom. Light snowfall moves in during the evening. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ in the morning and 2000-2500′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for an inch of new. Wind: light SW early, SW 10-20 in the afternoon and evening, and WSW 25-40 overnight.

Light snowfall continues all day Saturday. The snow level will be 2500-3000′ in the morning and 4000′ in the afternoon, possibly rising more overnight. Models suggest 0.2” WE during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. 0.3” WE is forecast overnight, for 2-3” of dense snow. Wind: WSW 20-40 in the morning, SW 20-40 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight.

Snow continues on Sunday, possibly heavy, but possibly not. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, 3500′ in the evening, and 4500′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 3” of new. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for 2” more snow. Light snowfall continues Monday followed by flurries Tuesday and dry, cooler weather Wednesday and Thursday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
