Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like a great day for fishing and road biking out there today. Better chances for wind sports happen on the weekend, but the wind will be on the gusty side of steady. Not to worry if you wing – doesn’t seem to matter if the wind is gusty for that sport. Note: I’m headed out on vacation tomorrow. Forecasts will resume the weekend of the 10th. Also note: I have a housesitter staying at my place, but she is not able to do the forecasts.

Looking at Thursday, we have mostly calm wind most of the day. You’ll find 10-15 at Viento through late morning. That extends to Rooster and Stevenson for a couple hours late morning as well. Afternoon: 5-10mph in the western Gorge and calm wind from Swell eastward. River flow is 104kcfs, river temp is 68F, fish over Bonneville yesterday 6825, and high temp for Hood River 81F.

Friday: even less windy. Light easterlies early, calm wind all through the Gorge most of the day, and light westerlies, 5mph or so, in the late evening. High temp: 84F. Saturday sees a weak front approaching from offshore. Westerlies start at 10-13mph from Stevenson to Hood River and hold through early afternoon. They get a nudge upwards from this weather system early afternoon: 17-20 from Stevenson to the Dalles with 10-13 at Rufus, which picks up to 17-20 in the evening. High temp: 85F. Current forecast for Sunday is 10-13 most of the day with gusty 20-23 late afternoon as far east as The Dalles. See you when I return from my meditation retreat!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger. Columbia Hills is closed due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon has reopened. Huffman: not sure.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
