Thursday. How about a lot of rain?

Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather system impacting the Gorge today looks a lot more like something we’d see mid-winter (minus the snow and cold temps, of course), meaning the wind setup will also look wintry. Strong southerly flow will leave the central Gorge in the doldrums, while the far west and far east Gorge will see some light westerlies. Most of the day will be glassy in most locations. After 2pm, the Multnomah Falls area will see gusty, rainy west wind at 12-15 or so. Arlington will also see gusty westerlies at 10-13 or 12-15. Nothing worth driving for, I suspect. (continued after the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

A secondary weather system moves through on Friday and weak high pressure builds offshore late in the day. If this happens early enough, we’ll see just enough wind for folks to get on the water late in the afternoon. So, Friday starts with light and variable wind and rain. The wind picks up to 10-13 east of Mosier by 11am or so. As the weather system progresses east and high pressure builds off the coast, the wind will pick up to gusty 19-22 from Mosier to Arlington. Stevenson will likely stay rainy with 13-16, and the same goes for Hood River, perhaps minus the rain.

Weak high pressure builds inland on Saturday for a sunny day. The wind starts off light and variable and picks up to 12-15 or so in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. Saturday also looks light and variable, or perhaps light westerly to start the day. As a weak weather system moves through, the wind will pick up to W 10-13 or so from Stevenson to Hood River. The next day with the potentia

Random Morning Thoughts

I was baking cookies this morning on a perfectly good heavyweight metal cookie sheet. I found myself contemplating purchasing a new ceramic cookie sheet to replace the one I broke a couple years back. This thought arose while I was eating a warm, gooey, crispy-outside couldn’t-be-better cookie. (Yes, that was my breakfast today: Rockstar Pure Zero and a fresh-baked cookie).

I realized that an expensive ceramic cookie sheet wasn’t going to improve my cookies in any way. I just wanted it because I wanted it. We do this all the f’ing time! New iPhone! New kite! New sail! New board! New, new, new, must have!

We often forget to ask ourselves an important question: “How will this thing improve my life?” We may find, after contemplating this, that we no longer desire the object. With more money in our pocket, we may find ourselves less stressed about finances or more willing to donate to a favorite cause (which will cause us to experience altruism and generosity, improving our sense of self-worth and sense of interconnectedness). Or maybe we realize that this item will actually improve life, so we go ahead and buy it and use it to improve our life and the lives of others.

This is not, mind you, a rant against materialism. It’s merely an encouragement towards conscious consumption. Choose wisely, my friends. Have an awesome day.

One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there with light rain in some locations, but it’s going to get WET, VERY WET today. The rain will be YUGE, especially between 2pm and 8pm. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 60’s later. Light wind. No rainbows. Friday looks less rainy than today, but still rainy enough that you won’t have to water your garden. The rain will let up in the afternoon for partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks mostly sunny with some high clouds. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

If you would like to ride bikes today, you should do it RIGHT NOW. Heavy rain is headed this way, and will likely shut down Post for a day or two due to muddy conditions. No, really, don’t ride when it’s muddy. You’ll damage the trails. No new trail information today. They are paving the Rowena curves 8:30 to 1:30 today, so you won’t be able to ride through there.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include a dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange at 11 and Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. The Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot bike rides usually happen on Thursday evenings at Dirty Fingers, but it’s pretty likely they’ll end up canceled due to wet trails today. There’s community yoga, no matter the weather, at 6pm at Samadhi this evening and Tai Chi at Our Saviour Church in Bingen at 6:30.

There are several events happening on Saturday – Arlington has the A-Town Throwdown windsports event along with music. Cascade Locks has opening day of sailing season with free sailboat rides and a BBQ. The White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon is Saturday with big thanks to the Kreps family.

Have an awesome day today!
