Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday at the beach, I had a conversation with some folks about the wind forecast for Friday and Saturday. Naturally the models have changed quite a bit from the time of that conversation, but in some sense, they’ve changed for the better. We’ll have three days of wind instead of two!

Thursday, however, doesn’t look very windy at all despite marine clouds in Portland this morning and sunshine in the Gorge. Temps max out in the low 90’s all the way from the metro area to the Gorge today. Best shot for wind is 18-22 at Viento this morning. The wind should die off midday and leave us with light wind all through the Gorge for the rest of the day. Sometimes we get an evening thermal, but it looks like the heat in the metro area will last too long for that bonus session to happen today. River flow readings this morning are 60-90kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 92F.

In yesterday’s report, we had a forecast of early-morning cool air arrival for Friday. That is no longer the case. However, the delay does give us two days of strong wind instead of one! So… Friday morning starts off light and variable. By 11am, we should have 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River with E 5-10 east of Hood River. An upper low and associated heat (104 for Pasco!) moves into the desert sometime in the afternoon or evening. When this happens, the wind will jump to 27-32 from Stevenson to Arlington. Elevated thunderstorms are not out of the question with this system, but they’re also not all that likely. Thunder or not, expect that afternoon wind to be pretty gusty. High temp: 91F.

Thanks to the late timing of that low, Saturday looks excellent. And cooler! Dawn Patrol wind will be 28-32 everywhere east of the clouds, at (cloudy) Viento, and in the low to mid 20’s under the clouds. Those clouds burn off and give us 28-32 from Stevenson to Threemile. This strong wind should last until early afternoon before fading out. By fading out, I mean 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 25-28 from Lyle to Threemile. Sunday: 17-20 in the morning and gusty 22-25 in the afternoon. Monday: calm? Sadly, I will be missing all the fun on Friday and Saturday as I’m off to a meditation retreat for a week. I’ll get you a forecast Friday morning before I leave. I hope your week is awesome. Please do not bother my housesitter for wind reports. She doesn’t know how to do a forecast!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Saturday is the Three Corner Rock 50k ultramarathon. Monday is the Roy Webster Cross-Channel Swim. Monday and Tuesday brings sailboat races to Cascade Locks. Sunday is the final CGWA swap meet of the season. Lot 1 at the Hood River waterfront.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
