Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today’s going to be another warm and sunny day of spring skiing on Mt. Hood. After today, we go into a cooler weather pattern with disagreement in the models on the amount of precipitation.

For Thursday: sunshine. Free air freezing level (FAF) 13,000′. Light and variable wind goes to S 5 in the afternoon and E 20 after midnight. Clouds move in on Friday, bringing in some light rain. The snow level will be 13,000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ (dropping to 4000′ at some point) overnight. Somewhere between a trace and 1/4” rain will fall starting around noon. Wind will be E 20 in the morning, variable to 20 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Saturday brings partly to mostly cloudy sky with flurries. Models disagree on snowfall amounts Saturday night. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 5000′ for most of the day, and 3500′ overnight. We’ll probably see flurries during the day with no accumulation. Overnight, we could see 2-6” of new snow. Wind will be W 10 in the morning, WNW 20 int eh afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Sunday brings light snowfall, but again, models are all over the place on amounts. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 4500′ int eh afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. 3-12” of new snow will fall in the 24 hour period, most likely the lower end of that range. Wind will be W 20-25 all day. Additional snowfall arrives on Monday before we head back into a warm, dry period for the middle of next week.

Random Morning Thoughts

Definitely no time for this today. Have yourself an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you like east wind, you’d better get it today. Next chance for easterlies is next Tuesday. For today, we’ll have 20-25 near Rooster and Stevenson with 10ish at Viento through early afternoon. After that, the wind will drop off to 10-15 and 5-10 respectively, and then it’ll turn westerly overnight.

Friday’s weather deserves more of a discussion. Low pressure moves in along the coast, driving a strong push of cold, damp air into the western half of the state. A weak warm front moves in from the south. The heat low, previously over Portland, shifts over the desert. This sets up a 25 degree cross-Cascade temperature gradient and large pressure gradient. All that is positive, but this is not an ideal setup: the atmosphere will be less stable than the ideal, allowing the wind to (potentially) flow above the Cascade crest. Also, we’d like to see offshore high pressure, not low pressure. So, like I said, not perfect. However…

We’ll start the day with 17-21 from Viento to Mosier. The wind will quickly ramp up to 28-33+ everywhere. As clouds move in, the wind will drop off to 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier (?) and keep climbing in the desert. Strongest wind will be Rowena to Arlington, where models are predicting gusts to 50mph.

Low pressure moves over the Northwest on Saturday and Sunday. That will knock down the wind speeds. We’ll see 10-13 in the west and 13-17 east of Mosier Saturday morning with 18-22 in the afternoon east of Mosier. Sunday looks like 12-15, just in the eastern Gorge, with 7-11 in the western Gorge.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another dry and sunny day. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 80’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Friday looks mostly clear to start with mostly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Scattered sprinkles are possible. Temps will be near 50 early and in the mid 60’s later. Strong west wind. 24% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and near 60 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 18% chance of rainbows.
