Thursday. Biketoberfest is Saturday.

As I was driving back home from school late last night with my awesome LED headlights shining the way home, my poor little car and I were being buffeted by the east wind. It’s still windy. You can expect 35-40 at Rooster all morning, fading to gusty 25-29 this afternoon. Stevenson, after a slower start in the teens, will bump up to 26-30 by mid-morning and fade to 22-25 this afternoon. In case you were curious, the 7am gradient was .19. That’s solid. Get yourself some easterlies today! Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with E 24-28 at Rooster and sees 21-24 at Stevenson. By mid-afternoon, the wind will back off to light easterlies or maybe even light and variable conditions.

Saturday and Sunday are looking like west wind days. Saturday’s wind will be frontally driven, meaning it’s likely to be showery/cloudy/rainbowy from Stevenson to HR. East of Hood River, you can expect gusty 23-26 pretty much all day. The likely top spots will be Mosier, Rowena, Avery and Arlington. Expect the wind to steady out a bit in the afternoon as the front moves east and high pressure builds offshore.

That offshore high will give us westerlies at 22-25 on Saturday, likely from Hood River to Rufus, but possibly not-so-great near Hood River if it remains cloudy and sprinkly.

Out on the coast, there will be nothing other than light and variable wind for the next three days. That means you might enjoy surfing. Today: W swell 6′ @ 12 seconds (awesome). Tomorrow: W 3 @ 13. Saturday: W 5 @ 11 (pretty good!).

Not much is happening at Jones and Sauvie’s the next three days, except for some possible 10-13 at Jones Friday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here thinking about the rupture-repair pattern in relationships. Things go wrong, we talk about them, and we move forward. When we engage in this cycle, rather than burying conflict, we strengthen our relationships.

This came up for me in conversation with a friend the other day. She’s a mom, and she was worried about how she could ever be perfect enough to raise untraumatized kids. Raising kids, having relationships, having friendships, being part of a workplace… none of these are about being perfect.

When we make mistakes with little ones (including the little ones who belong to our friends), and we explore what happened and apologize, we teach the little ones important lessons. We show them how to handle conflict. We show them how to express their feelings. We teach them how to take responsibility for their actions. Most importantly (IMHO) we teach them how to trust people, even when things aren’t rosy all the time. We teach them to look past momentary difficulties and focus on future reconnecting.

It’s not just about little ones. It’s about us as adults connecting with other adults. It’s about us connecting with our workplaces and our coworkers. It’s about us building connection in our community. So if you find yourself wanting to completely disengage rather than repair a relationship, look closely at why you’re doing that. There may be a huge opportunity to create trust and support, rather than creating a void in your world. Easier said than done, sure, but we grow by taking risks. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful morning that started with a beautiful sunrise. Expect a few high clouds today with lots of sunshine. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong easterlies. Tomorrow starts off sunny and progresses to partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. East wind early gives way to calm conditions late. Saturday looks mostly cloudy with sprinkles and showers pretty much all day. Not heavy rain, mind you. Just light rain. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind, 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I was worried the trail conditions might have changed, so I went out and checked them again yesterday morning before I went to school. Lower Post is still in awesome shape, and I also have reports of awesomeness on Hospital Hill. The Whoopdee climb out is open. There’s a work party on the 170 (see below for details) on Saturday, and there’s a work party on the Cooks Meadow extension on November 1st. Save the date. In road biking news, you will suffer from the effects of a strong east gradient all day today. Tomorrow afternoon looks great. The weekend brings west wind of sufficient strength to mess up your ride.

Biketoberfest is Saturday. Be at the Whoopdee on 10-5pm for food, music, and a raffle fundraiser. No working. Just riding and having a great time. Oh, and there are free Trek demos.
