Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and it’s partly cloudy on Mt. Hood. The clouds will burn off by late morning, leaving us with sunshine. No precip today. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 5000′ this morning, 6000′ this afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind will be NE 10 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Friday starts off high overcast, potentially with a colorful sunrise. A cold front moves in overnight, bringing light snowfall after 11pm. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. About 1-2” snow falls overnight. Wind will be W 10 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 40 after midnight.

Saturday starts off with orographic snow flurries and quickly turns sunny. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Up to 1” snow will fall in the morning. Wind will be WSW 40 early, NW 115 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.

Sunday looks clear. The FAF will be 3000′ early, and 6000′ overnight. Light wind. Monday looks sunny. The FAF climbs to 10,000′ in the afternoon. E/NE wind at 10-15. The long range forecast is all over the place. The GFS is calling for snow Wednesday and Thursday, and the ECMWF holds on to sunshine and warm weather.

Random Morning Thoughts

This is the busiest time of year for me, and that means I have to be extra careful to create space for fun in my life. For example, I took my bike to internship with me yesterday and did a quick lap at Syncline before I went home. BEST INTERNSHIP EVER!

I do prioritize exercise – it keeps me sane. But I hadn’t been on my mountain bike in weeks. I forgot how much fun it is, how much more invigorating and life-affirming it is than going to the Power Station (which incidentally, I like for the gritty positive affirmations on the walls and the dedication of the users).

Anyway, we can try and fool ourselves that work, family, and friends are enough. But that’s just not true: we have to make space for the things that completely engage our souls. For me, that’s meditation retreats and bombing down beautiful rocky hills on my bike, among other things. What are those things for you? How can you create space in your busy life to participate in those things. Guilt-free. Just a reminder. May you feel fulfilled. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Thursday wind starts off light and variable with a westerly gradient of .05 from Portland to The Dalles. River temp is currently 47 degrees. As the day goes on, the wind will pick up a bit. We’ll have W 5-10 until mid-afternoon. After 5pm, the wind will pick up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier. Friday sees an upper level low moving into BC and an associated cold front approaching the coast. This combo will drive gusty west wind in the afternoon. The day starts with light westerlies. Mid-afternoon sees the wind pick up to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Saturday looks like 10-15 through the entire Gorge in the morning with 17-20 from Mosier to Rufus in the afternoon. Sunday’s forecast is 15-20 out of the east. There’s a swap meet at Windance on Sunday.

Kona bikes will be here with free demos on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5pm at Family Man.
