Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m feeling pretty sore after yesterday. Today looks lighter, and might give you a chance for a less pummeling experience on the river. We’re right back to strong westerlies Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which makes for some very happy event organizers and paddlers, sailors, wingers, kiters, and downwind windsurfers participating in the Blowout. Planning on getting out? On Friday, watch out for the Laser/Aero Gorge blowout (about 30 boats) from Cascade Locks to Hood River. Also Friday: about 800 boats for the Gorge Downwind Champs from Stevenson to Hood River (parking is likely to be limited on the Hood River waterfront). Friday-Sunday: Bridge of the Gods Kitefest in Stevenson with the Blowout (all downwind objects welcome) on either Saturday or Sunday.

Let’s look at Thursday. We have an offshore low and southerly upper level flow with lesser temp gradients forecast across the Cascades. Portland is starting clear, as is the Gorge. The day starts with 17-20 from Stevenson to Swell. Models suggest a midday lull to 13-16 between Stevenson and Mosier with light/variable wind in the eastern Gorge. Evening westerlies should rise to gusty 16-19 between Stevenson and The Dalles with Swell the exception. You’ll find gusty 14-17 there and for much of the stretch between Viento and Hood River. River flow readings are 165-242kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 87F.

A front offshore will make conditions a bit unreliable on Friday despite the presence of large gradients. Dawn Patrol (get it early) will be 25-28 from Viento to Mosier with 20-24 at Stevenson and 13-16 from Lyle to Arlington. Midday wind falls to up-and-down 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-23 at Rufus and 10-13 at Arlington. Models suggest the wind will pick up to 25-28 from Hood River to Rufus mid-afternoon with 22-25 at Arlington and 17-20 between Swell and Stevenson. High temp: 84F. Watch out for the boats!

Saturday starts off lighter. Don’t be fooled. Daybreak wind will be 13-16 from Viento to Mosier with 5-10 at Stevenson and 10-13 east of Mosier. Be patient. Midday: 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20 to Rufus. Want more wind? Set your sights on mid to late afternoon: 26-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 23-26 from Avery to Arlington. High temp: 83F.

A deeper marine push sets up a solid Sunday showing: 26-30mph focused west of The Dalles. Monday’s forecast is all over the place. For example, the Euro’s temp forecast is 76-91F for a high, meaning we don’t have enough information yet to forecast. All this wind makes for some very, very happy event organizers and participants. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. Their downwind race (800 boats) is scheduled Saturday. The Laser/Aero Gorge Blowout is scheduled Friday. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the (all windsport) Blowout is scheduled Friday-Sunday. The Blowout is likely to be Sunday. The Race Across Oregon starts Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain may still have some blowdown. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: full of ticks and poison oak. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
