Gorge Wind Forecast

Another one of those nuking days is on tap today. You’ll be wanting to pack your smallest wing, sail, or kite (or all three) and also perhaps a PFD and helmet. A front moves inland and combines with desert low pressure and building high pressure offshore for a perfect storm of early-season dynamics. Expect light and variable wind to start the day. Don’t be fooled. Once those pieces get moving, it’ll get windy. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Arlington. Rain is coming. Head east. In the afternoon, the wind picks up some drizzle and settles at gusty 17-24 from Hood River westward. Mosier is a question mark. From Lyle to Arlington, you’ll find gusty 30-40. East of there: 28-33 for you Threemile and Boardman aficionados. River flow is 216kcfs (that’s perfect for Rufus), river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 69F. Can’t make today? Don’t worry – there’s more on tap. It won’t be as extreme, but it’ll still be plenty. Friday starts with 10-13 and sprinkles in the western Gorge. East of The Dalles: gusty 18-23 to start the day. Afternoon wind builds to 27-32 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: colder – 59F. Saturday’s rain forecast is a bit uncertain, which makes the wind forecast uncertain as well. As of right now, we’re looking at 12-15 everywhere to start the day. Afternoon: 14-17 west and gusty 27-31 from Avery to Arlington. High temp: 64F. Sunday’s forecast is currently 24-27+ from Lyle to Rufus. See – plenty of wind for everyone!

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return soon.

Mt. Hood Weather forecast

High clouds above the slopes this morning give way to drizzle this afternoon and then snowfall over the next several days. For Thursday, we’re looking at a freezing level of 12,000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, 4000′ in the evening, and 2500-3000′ after midnight. Rain starts up around 2pm. About 0.05” falls before the switch to snow. About 0.1” water equivalent is forecast tonight, for 1/2” to 1” of new. Wind: S 10-20 in the morning builds to SW 30-45 this afternoon. In the evening, the wind turns to W 40 and then drops to W 20 after midnight. Friday looks snowy. The snow level will be 2500-3000′ all day and will fall to 1500-2000′ under partly cloudy sky overnight. About 0.4” to 0.7” WE is forecast, for 3-6” of new snow during the day. Overnight: a trace to 1/2” new. Wind: W 20-25 in the morning, NW 25-35 in the afternoon and overnight. Sunshine and flurries start the day on Saturday. Clouds move in during the afternoon and bring light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ in the morning and 3500′ from afternoon on. A trace is forecast during the day, and 0.1” WE for 1” of new is the overnight forecast. Wind: NW 25-35 in the morning, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 overnight. Light snowfall continues on Sunday. Warmer, sunny weather returns next week.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
