Gorge Wind Forecast

Mother Nature dished up another very strong westerly day yesterday. Hopefully you made it out for a session. If you missed it, there’s more wind on the way. Let’s talk about Friday – thank goodness it’s here! Areas west of The Dalles will have rain showers on and off all day today. If you want rainbows, go there. If you want wind, head east; the western Gorge stays in the single digits or low teens all day. The eastern Gorge starts at 10-13, but the gradients and weather pattern hint at more. Offshore high pressure holds at 1031mb, and the desert will warm up. Expect a slow and steady build to 28-32 from Avery to Arlington. River flow is 222kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Offshore high pressure sticks around on Saturday. Another westerly day results. Morning wind will be in the single digits in the west and in the 10-13 range east of Doug’s. By late morning, westerlies jump to 22-25 from Lyle to Rufus. Want more? Wait another couple hours for 25-28 from Lyle to Arlington. Clouds stick around in the western Gorge for most of the day; the wind holds at 10-13 west of Lyle. Possible exception: Viento, of course, where it could be windier despite the clouds.

On Sunday, a very weak weather system swings through. Wind speeds drop and so does quality. You’ll find 10-13 everywhere to start the day. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 18-22 from Swell to Rufus with 11-14 east and west of that section of river. As of this morning, we’re looking at a shift to lighter wind and warmer, sunnier weather for the first half of next week. Still, it’s likely to be windier than models currently predict thanks to offshore high pressure. We’ll keep an eye on it. Have fun today!

Mt. Hood Weather forecast

Winter weather returns for the mountains this weekend. The snow level will stay below 4000′ for the period, and a few inches will accumulate. It’s back to warm weather and sunshine next week, and then perhaps the forecast will end for the season!

The mountains picked up about an inch of new last night. Judging by the water content, that’s a very soggy inch. A few more inches are forecast today, and they should be less wet. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 3500′ this afternoon, and 1500-2000′ after midnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 3” new snow. A trace is expected overnight. Wind: W 25 in the morning, NW 25-35 from mid afternoon on through the night.

Saturday starts with clear sky or orographic flurries. High clouds move in around sunrise, and light snowfall arrives late afternoon. Just a trace of snow is forecast from this setup. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. Wind: NW 25-35 early dropping to NW 15-25 in the afternoon and evening. Flurries sunday morning give way to clear sky in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 3500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. Wind: NW15-20 during the day and E 5 overnight. Sunny, dry, warmer weather returns on Monday and sticks around through at least Wednesday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Light to moderate westerlies. 99.99% chance of rainbows. Saturday starts off partly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s to low 40’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Sunday will be cloudy in the morning and mostly cloudy in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s later.
