Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s not much at all going on in the mountains this week, meaning we’ll have spring skiing for the next couple of days. Light snowfall returns for periods of the weekend.

For Thursday, expect a partly cloudy start with sunshine most of the day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 6000′ in the morning, slowly rising to 8000′ after midnight. Wind will be NW 10-15 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and WNW 25 after midnight.

Friday’s weather bounces around between partly cloudy, sunny, and cloudy. Very light snowfall moves in after midnight. The FAF will be 8000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 4500′-5000′ after midnight. Just a trace of new snow will fall. Wind will be WNW 25 early, WNW 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 10 after midnight.

Saturday sees light snowfall in the morning, partly cloudy sky in the afternoon, and a few snow flurries after midnight. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 5500′ around midnight, and 2000′ after midnight. Just a trace of snow will fall in the 24 hour period. Wind will be WSW 10 in the morning, W 25-30 in the afternoon, and W 30 in the evening.

Sunday sees light snowfall all day. Models disagree on the overnight weather, but it’ll probably be light snowfall moving to clear sky late. The snow level will be 2000′ all day. After the sky clears, the freezing level will drop to about 500′. Approximately .1-.2” WV falls during the day, for up to 2” of new snow. Another .2” falls in the evening, for up to 2” of additional snow. Wind will be W 30 all day and NW 30 after midnight. Monday looks clear or partly cloudy or snowy depending on the model you choose, meaning we can’t make a prediction at this point!

Random Morning Thoughts

Our minds can feel out of control sometimes. They do frustrating stuff. One that really bothers me is when my mind wakes me up in the middle of the night with a stream of thoughts about stressful things. I’m sure some of you have had this experience. Maybe you’ve found a way to deal with this in the moment, and maybe you haven’t.

Sometimes it’s helpful to think about this in a different way. Figuring out a trick to get back to sleep (breathing, meditating, reading, counting sheep, etc.) equates to treating the symptom. Understanding what causes your mind to do this to you will help you prevent it from happening in the first place (for me, this is a sign that I need to take a couple of days off from my work).

A bonus of looking at the bigger picture is that deeper understanding will allow you to feel more in control of your mind. If you understand causes, you can implement solutions, perhaps even permanent solutions. You’ll feel less helpless and more powerful. And that in itself will lead to less anxiety in your life. May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday, and westerly flow will continue through the Gorge for the next few days, which should make those kiteboarders who were out at the Event Site yesterday very happy! For Thursday, we’ll have a burst of 20-24 from Viento to Hood River early, fading to 10-13 midday, and picking up to 14-18 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. Friday starts with W 16-19. A weak low moves into BC midday. That combines with offshore high pressure at 1027mb or so for W 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington between 10am and 3pm or so. The wind will back off late in the afternoon. Saturday looks dead calm. Sunday currently has a forecast of W 23-27 east of Rowena.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear and quite lovely out there this morning. The weather will become even more sunny as the day goes on. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and near 60 in the afternoon. Road and Mountain Biking

I’m guessing there’s a lot of good dirt out there right now. If you want to do a group ride, Dirty Fingers has a gravel ride on Sunday morning followed by viewing of the Tour de Flanders on the TV at 3pm. As far as road biking goes, it’ll be a bit windy through Friday. If you can tolerate scattered sprinkles, Saturday should be wind-free.

Upcoming Events

There’s free meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6:15am. There’s free yoga at 8am at Flow. That’s followed by $5Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, community yoga at 6pm at Samadhi in White Salmon, and free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Coming up Sunday, Dirty Fingers has a group gravel ride followed by viewing of the Tour de Flanders at 3pm. Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s a garden party at Pacific Hermitage starting at 10:30am on Saturday – potluck meal followed by garden work followed by tea time with the monks.
