Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A Yesterday’s weather, as predicted, really messed with the predictability of the wind. The next few days bring more seasonable weather, more typical, more manageable. We’ll see westerlies of varying strengths through Sunday. After that, a switch to easterlies is possible.

For Thursday, the day started with gradients of .10 and .08. Wind speeds ranged from the mid to upper teens most places to mid-20’s near Maryhill. It’s likely that the wind will die off in the eastern Gorge today, despite strong early gradients. Keep that in mind when making your choices. So, we’ll have 15-18 for Dawn Patrol from Stevenson to Roosevelt. The wind jumps to 22-25 for short period everywhere this morning before dying off to 10-13 east of The Dalles this afternoon. While models decrease the wind even more, I think we’ll see that 22-25 hold from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon. River flow is 111kcfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Friday sees offshore high pressure decay a bit as a low pressure system approaches BC. The accompanying front will likely decrease afternoon wind quality. So… 11-14 from Viento to Hood River to start the day, building just a few miles per hour through late morning. Afternoon wind, ahead of this system, jumps to gusty 20-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm. The Hatchery region tends to be neglected in this sort of setup; expect gusty 17-20 there.

That weather system moves through on Saturday morning and high pressure builds offshore. Generally speaking, this is a good setup for the Doug’s region, and not so great for the western Gorge. Morning wind looks like gusty 21-24 from Viento to Moiser. Afternoon wind: gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier, 25-28 from Rowena to Roosevelt, strongest Rowena to Avery. If that front moves through earlier than forecast, we could see solid 25-28 from Stevenson to Roosevelt. It’s worth noting that the sounding model keeps Portland in clouds all day; that’s a good indicator for wind that lasts all day long and could outperform models. Sunday currently looks to peak at 24-27 with an afternoon fade.

Road and Mountain Biking

For road bikers: chip seal along Highway 30 from Mosier eastward just had a layer of sticky oil added to the top. Reports are that it could use some time to cure before it’s good for biking. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
