Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! At least four more days of wind are on tap, and that includes a super-nuker on Tuesday. Yay! My kind of day! Beyond that, the forecast is unclear thanks to lack of clarity around the placement of a ridge of high pressure. We’ll talk more about that later. But before we dive into the forecast, remember that the Port of Hood River is updating us about the bridge at 10am today both in person and over YouTube.

Sunday opens up with low and mid-level clouds past Hood River. To the east: sun. Pressures were 30.11/30.03/29.99 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.04 to start the day. Offshore, there’s a weak low running interference between us and supportive high pressure off the California coast. This setup makes things a bit on the gusty side today. Dawn patrol was running in the 13-16 range all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. By late morning, the wind settles in: gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with gusty 20-23 from Lyle to Rufus. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 18-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 120-189kcfs, river temp is 64.94F, and high temp forecast is 79F with high humidity early and decreasing humidity later.

Monday takes its time, but eventually settles in to what we like to call “Classic Gorge Setup”. That’s when very strong offshore high pressure combines with a heat low in the desert and otherwise stable conditions. Wind always exceeds models in this setup. For now, let’s call dawn patrol at 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. Westerlies eventually rise to 26-29+ from Stevenson to Rufus. No need to rush. Let that offshore high build for best results in wind quality and quantity. High temp: 78F.

Super strong offshore high pressure on Tuesday keeps the west side cool while the east side heats. Dawn Patrol should be in the low to mid 20’s at Swell. Afternoon: nuking from Stevenson to Rufus all the way through sunset. By nuking, we’re talking 30+ reading at Swell (which reads low) and 30-35+ from Mosier to Rufus. In this setup, models usually discount Arlington, but Arlington usually outperforms the models. High temps range from the mid-upper 70s near Hood River to the low 80s at Arlington. Sounds like an ideal day for those of us who like big wind! Perfect wind. Perfect temps!

Extended: models clear out the clouds earlier on the west side, but we still should see mid to upper 20s from Stevenson to Doug’s. Model consensus falls apart starting Thursday. All of the ensemble members of the ECMWF call for a lighter day, but it’s not clear how light. After that: even more uncertainty. It’s going to be hot, but it’s not clear where it will be hottest. And that makes all the difference in it being windy or not. So, we’ll leave it there for now. See you on the river!
