Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Swap Meet morning at Windance. You’ll be able to get your fill of shopping and swapping, and then you’ll be back on the river playing for the rest of the day. As a matter of fact, the only rest day in sight is Wednesday, when it’ll be hot and calm all across the land. You’ll probably want a rest day by then!

Sunday starts with clear sky (no marine clouds, sad!) and pressures of 30.15/30.08/30.08. That’s 0.07 from PDX to DLS and says you should stay close to Hood River for the best results today. Expect the conditions (like yesterday) to be a bit up and down as a low meanders off the WA coast and Portland also turns warm and sunny. That said… expect 15-18 early from Viento to Swell with 10-13 to the east and 5-10 at Stevenson. Around midday, the wind picks up to 18-22 from Stevenson to Hood River as gradients increase. Models like the idea of a thermal kick upwards in the evening: 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 at Avery. The wind turns light midday in the eastern Gorge and stays that way, so don’t you be driving that direction! River flow readings are 144-165kcfs, river temp is 70F, and Hood River high temp forecast is 84F.

A bit of “stuff” happening well offshore may or may not impact wind quality on Monday. The day starts with 16-19 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 east to Arlington. The wind bounces around between the 21-24 range and the 19-22 range with the strongest wind morning and evening. Models suggest midday heating will have a detrimental impact on wind strength early afternoon. Thank goodness for foils – light wind doesn’t matter so much any more!

Looking at Tuesday, we see the wind and heating fighting each other. That said, models are suggesting max gusts in the low to mid 20’s. That should be enough for a slightly lesser version of Monday: morning and late afternoon wind at 16-19ish and midday wind at 13-16ish. Wednesday looks too hot in the metro area for much wind in the Gorge. That said about 30-50% of the ensembles members hold on to just enough westerlies for light-wind sports at 100F on Wednesday. If it’s gotta be 100, then let’s have some wind with it! Thursday looks stronger late in the day, and models are hinting at a modified “the cooldown you were looking for” on Friday. However… models are far from agreeing that the heatwave will end on Friday. So, cross your fingers!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this week. Unfortunately, the moon also peaks this week. The Dufur Threshing Bee is this weekend. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
