Sunday. Wacky weather, wacky wind. Go play today!

a href=”http://bcphotography.zenfolio.com”>DSC_2591-Edit
At 8am there were solid gradients and decent wind on the river with a bit of convective debris in the sky. That convective debris is a sign of complications in the forecast today, so we’ll take it step by step. First, your gradients: .12 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc), .35 (eph-dls). That started us of with wind in the teens from Stevenson to Doug’s. Now, here’s what’s happening today: one shortwave moves through this morning, another moves through this afternoon, and an upper level low (ULL) tracks from southern Oregon to the Washington desert late in the day. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

All these dynamics could combine to cause enough instability to make huge gradients and no wind. On the other hand, the models could be correct, and we could see nuking westerlies. If the models are correct, we’ll see the wind rise to 24-28 from Swell to Doug’s by noon, with the Rufus stretch joining in shortly after. As that ULL moves into the desert late in the afternoon, gradients skyrocket, giving us 30-40 from Doug’s to Arlington. If it happens, it won’t be long lasting, so drive pre-emptively. Make the decision based on the storm tracker (link in the weather forecast). If you see thunderstorms, don’t drive. If you don’t, it might just be okay. Cross your fingers and hope for the best today, and get out as soon as the wind hits your desired wind speed.

Tomorrow starts with 22-25 and picks up to 26-30, strongest from Hood River to Mosier early and filling in from Rufus to Arlington at 24-28+ in the afternoon. There aren’t strong dynamics tomorrow, so the wind should be steadier and more reliable. Expect 13-16+ on Tuesday morning and gusty 23-26 in the afternoon as a weak weather system moves into BC.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow: 20-23. Sauvie’s today: 15-18. Sauvie’s tomorrow: 11-14. Same goes as with the Gorge forecast: thunderstorms could shut these beaches down too.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: light/light/light, W 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: light/light/25-30, W 4′ @ 9. Tuesday: 15-20/25-30/25-30, W 3 @ 9.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I didn’t get home until 1:30 last night, so I slept in this morning. Sorry about the late forecast! I was in Portland last night for the Portland World Naked Bike Ride, the largest in the world. And when I say “large”, I mean over 10,000 people, perhaps many, many more this year given the warm weather. Maybe I should say “hot” weather. It was so hot that “as bare as you dare” wasn’t little enough clothing to keep people cool.

The interesting thing about the PNBR is the variety of people and bodies who show up. The ride is ostensibly trying to make a point about cyclists’ vulnerability. We bikers are, essentially, naked compared to cars. One love tap from a 2000 lb vehicle can kill a cyclist. Remember that as you’re driving, and give cyclists three feet.

Politics aside, the ride is also about embracing bodies. Our society judges bodies for being too big, too small, not shapely enough, too curvy, etc., and our society judges boobies and penises for being the wrong size and shape. At PNBR, the bodies are representative of what you’d see at Rosauer’s: all colors, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. People aren’t out there talking smack; they’re out there embracing this. We could all learn a lesson from those naked cyclists: all bodies are okay, and we’re all vulnerable. Celebrate both of those today.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The storm tracker says that there are thunderstorms to the west of us this morning, but we don’t even have much convective debris. That’ll change later as a pair of shortwaves moves through and an upper level low heads east. Watch for a possibility of thunder, lightning, and a colorful sunset. I woke up late today, but still… it was 79 degrees at 8am. Expect mid-90’s this afternoon with high humidity. Moderate wind becomes nuking. 1% chance of rainbows, 91% chance of unicorns on the river.

Tomorrow looks warm and muggy with temps in the upper 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon along with increasing clouds and a chance of thunder. Strong wind. No rainbows. Tuesday will be in the mid 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late. Hotter, less muggy (thank goodness) weather returns on Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

In trail news, we’re now at IFPL III, meaning no more moto riding on forest lands, including the Post Canyon area. Stevenson, Kreps, and other private landowners are closing their lands to all access, including hiking, next Thursday, so if you’d like to ride Hospital Hill or Whoopdee, do it now. As of yesterday, there were a couple of moto trails open in the Gifford Pinchot, but check with the ranger station first.

The PNBR last night was insane. And hot. Miraculous, for it to be hot like that in Portland in June.
