Mt. Hood Forecast

Today’s the last regular-season forecast for Mt. Hood. Forecasts over the spring and summer will be on as-needed basis. That likely includes next weekend, when we could see some snow on the slopes! Until then… just a lot of sunshine and a bit of drizzle. For Sunday, expect a clear, sunny day and high clouds overnight. The snow snapped this morning. That means perfect corn later. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, WNW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 after midnight.

Monday starts with high clouds and adds lower clouds. Drizzle arrives around 2pm and continues through midnight. Just a trace falls. After that: clear sky. The snow level will be 5500′ for the period. Wind: NW 15-20 early, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.

Tuesday looks sunny all day. The FAF will be 2000′-5500′ in the morning (warmer air is moving in), 7000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. Wind: NW 20-25 early, W 5-10 in the afternoon, and SE 15-20 after midnight. Wednesday will be sunny and warm with mountain temps approaching 60F. Rain arrives Thursday morning and likely switches to snow Thursday night with a few inches of accumulation. Precip continues at least through Saturday, although models aren’t clear on details.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

When I arrived at The Wall yesterday, I noticed that reality had vastly out-performed my forecast. And in looking back at the models this morning, it appeared something shifted between the model run I looked at and the later run. Well, kudos to iKite/iWind for coming closer to reality, which was a 40mph average wind speed and giant swell!

Today will not be that windy, but it will still be plenty windy for whatever you’d like to do on the river. Today is the first race of the Epic Vortex Paddle Series, so you could do that if you want! We’re looking at morning gradients of .08 and .05, which indicates you’ll be happy between Swell and Rufus today. Early wind will be in the 20’s at Viento and Rufus and 5-10ish elsewhere. Offshore high pressure (1031mb) combines with an inland heat low this afternoon for 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. It’ll likely be a slow build to this peak, so take some time this morning to get a few things done. Like stretching after yesterday’s nuker! River flow is 183kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is a balmy 68F.

Monday sees an approaching weak front. It won’t do much other than add a bit of gustiness to the wind and drizzle west of Hood River. Expect morning westerlies at 10-13 all through the land, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday: gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington. Afternoon: 12-15 and drizzle from Hood River westward with questionable conditions at Mosier and gusty 26-30 from Lyle to Arlington with Rufus the sweet spot. High temp: 66F. On to Tuesday: high pressure starts to build across the land. Thankfully, offshore high pressure will still be bigger, badder, and stronger. Morning westerlies start at 7-10 from Stevenson to Arlington. Don’t head east; the wind will back off out there. Afternoon wind steadies out at 12-15 or so from Stevenson to The Dalles with light wind out east.

Wednesday’s setup combines an unseasonably strong offshore low pressure system with high pressure over Alberta and Saskatchewan. Result: widespread strong easterlies. We’ll likely see 25-35 near Stevenson most of the day with 15-25 from Viento east to Boardman in the afternoon. The next couple of days after that should have onshore flow, but will also likely have some rain. Enjoy the week!

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky this morning turns totally clear later. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 60’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Monday starts clear and turns cloudy late morning. Sprinkles are possible from mid-afternoon on. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 16% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be partly cloudy to start and clear later. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 70’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows.
