Tuesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather: cloudy and breezy today. Warm and sunny for the extended forecast…

Hi friends! Nice to see you, ALL of you, on the Nch’i Wana yesterday. Goodness gracious was it crowded for late September! We have another westerly day on tap today, although an approaching weather system will make the wind gusty and unreliable. Starting Wednesday, high pressure takes over and knocks the wind speed down; models…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Nice to see you, ALL of you, on the Nch’i Wana yesterday. Goodness gracious was it crowded for late September! We have another westerly day on tap today, although an approaching weather system will make the wind gusty and unreliable. Starting Wednesday, high pressure takes over and knocks the wind speed down; models are also having difficulties deciding whether it will be just windy enough or not windy at all.

Tuesday started with enough gradient to make it windy: 30.03/29.95/29.89. Westerlies were generally running 10-13mph all the way from Viento to Threemile at daybreak. It appears that areas west of The Dalles will stay at 13-16mph (less at times) today. Better chances of stronger wind exist east of The Dalles.

Models suggest 22-25mph from Avery to Threemile after 11am with a slight chance of a little more and about 30% chance of 20-23mph instead of 22-25mph. A frontal system moving inland will make the wind extra gusty. River flow over the last 24 hours was 75-107kcfs, river temp is 65.5F, and high temp forecast is 67F in Hood River and 75F in the desert.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Wednesday brings a bit of uncertainty. Some models keep the wind calm. Others give us light to moderate westerlies. I’ll take a guess: light wind, under 10mph to start. Westerlies at 13-16mph from Stevenson to Hood River from 11am on. High temp: 72 degrees in Hood River.

Thursday brings light and variable wind. I should not that about 10% of the Euro ensemble members bring upper teens to the Corridor (Viento to Hood River). High temp: 75 degrees. Similar likelihood of wind is present for Friday. On Saturday, we’re expecting easterlies at 25-30mph at the usual east wind spots – Stevenson, Home Valley, Viento, and Iwash/Rooster. Some sort of east wind, probably lighter, is likely to persist into Sunday. That’s what I’ve got for you today. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! It’s a cloudy start to the day in Hood River and many other places in the Gorge. Thanks to a dissipating cold front, we’ll have clouds much of the day west of Mosier and even some drizzle west of Wyeth. Today’s rain will likely be all she wrote for rain for the next couple of weeks – we’re expecting dry, mostly-sunny weather and above-normal temps as we move into the deeper forecast future.

Fun stuff to start the day: Glenwood was 55 degrees this morning (thanks, clouds and breeze), 27 degrees warmer than it was yesterday. Wow! The next overnight bridge closure was canceled as the contractor rescheduled the bridge coating. They’re gloating right now, as they’re currently boating. Elsewhere in the country, as you can see from the graphic, there are a lot of dicks. Flood watch dick and thunderstorm potential dick have erected themselves.

For the rest of today, we’ll have clouds west of Lyle, drizzle west of Cascade Locks, and west wind at 15-20mph ish all the way from Stevenson to Boardman. The western Gorge drizzle ends around 2pm, but it returns between 8pm and 11pm as far east as Cascade Locks. Highs range from 64 in Stevenson to six-seven in Hood River, 75 in The Dalles, and 77 in Pasco.

Overnight, temps fall to 45-55 degrees. We start Wednesday cloudy west of Mosier and east of Arlington’s triangle with mostly clear sky between Mosier and Arlington. Wind will be calm to light westerly as a low offshore prevents any significant onshore gradients from manifesting. Highs: 71-77.

On Thursday, we’ll have mostly clear sky and a 40-55 degree start. A few high clouds linger, but they won’t have much impact. High temps: 73/74/78/75 with light/variable wind. Friday looks a little warmer but otherwise similar. High temps will be 75-80. On Saturday, warm, dry, sunny weather persists along with a switch to east wind. Easterlies will be strongest near Iwash (dick) Rock and Stevenson: 25-30mph. Warm, sunny weather is likely to persist well into next week. Wow. Safe travels. -TATAS
