Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Sunday’s going to be a mighty stormy day on Mt. Hood. After that, the weather mellows out for much of next week. Plenty of sunshine is in the forecast along with above-freezing temps. Fingers crossed for corn snow conditions and Superbowl for the latter half of the week.

For Sunday, a wind-driven shutdown seems likely mid-morning as heavy snowfall combines with very strong wind. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and will fall as low as 1000′ tonight. About 1.0” water value (WV) falls during the day. With temps relatively warm for the bulk of this, the mountain should see 7-9” of new snow. Another 0.1” WV falls overnight (down quite a bit from yesterday’s forecast), for just another inch of new. Wind will be problematic at best and full-shutdown at worst. Expect WSW 55 early, WSW 70 mid-morning, W 50 in the afternoon, and NW 45 overnight.

Monday brings intermittent flurries and sunbreaks with high clouds in the evening. The snow level will be 1000′ all day with the free air freezing level down to 0′ overnight. Just a inch of so of new snow falls during the day. Wind will be NW 45 early, NW 20 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight. Chances are that the groom and Nordic skiing will be excellent on Monday.

Tuesday looks partly cloudy with perhaps a trace of snow overnight. The free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow is possible, and that would fall around midnight. Wind: NW 10 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, W 20 overnight. Wednesday and Thursday look sunny and warmer with above-freezing temps on the slopes. The next significant weather system is slated for next weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s going to be a nuker of a Sunday in the Gorge as a low pressure system moves inland and high pressure builds offshore behind it. Expect light westerlies pre-dawn. The wind quickly picks up to gusty 20-26 in the west and 30-40+ east of The Dalles after 10am. Pre-emptively driving will put you in place for the best wind. Try anywhere between Arlington and Boardman for 3.0 conditions. River flow is 112kcfs and temp is 38 degrees. Play with a partner. Keep them in sight.

Monday starts with 24-27 from Swell or Viento to Arlington. The wind backs off to 12-15 in the west and high pressure shifts inland. The wind fades to 18-22 in the east. Tuesday starts with easterlies at 20-25 from Rooster to Viento. The wind goes to light easterly in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Sunday looks like a rainy morning with showers in the afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 40’s later. Strong west wind. 100% chance of rainbows. Monday looks cloudy and then partly cloudy. Scattered sprinkles are possible. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Strong west wind fades to moderate. 58% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be near 30 early and in the low 50’s later. Light wind. No rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Cycling

While lower Syncline might be dry enough to ride today, it’ll be too windy to be pleasant. Above the fence line you will find freeze-thaw, especially on Hidden. Hospital Hill, Post, and Whoopdee will all have freeze-thaw in exposed areas. Please don’t ride through the mud. Turn around and go home and get your road or gravel bike so you don’t do permanent trail damage!
