Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Sunday’s starting off with light wind, but don’t let that deter you from planning on a river day today. You’ll get your chance this afternoon. Same goes for Monday and Tuesday. Chances for wind are less on Wednesday, but we should be back to westerlies right quick after this not-so-hot “heat wave” ends on Friday.

Looking at Sunday morning, we start with pressures of 30.01/29.95/29.90 for gradients of .06 and .05. Weak high pressure offshore today combines with a heat low in the desert for standard-variety Gorge westerlies. Some instability is forecast east of The Dalles and could impact wind quality/strength today, especially in the afternoon. Get it early just in case. Dawn Patrol winds were generally in the 5-10 range all through the Gorge. By late morning, desert heating nudges average speeds into the 16-19 range from Stevenson to Hood River, perhaps Mosier too. The Rowena stretch will hold at 7-10 or perhaps 10-13. Afternoon wind picks up to 19-22 and fills in from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow readings this morning are 99-156kcfs. They jumped to about 200-220 yesterday afternoon. High temp forecast: 89F.

Monday sees a trough move inland for somewhat cooler air on the west side and a greater area of atmospheric instability. Dawn Patrol is a possibility with a forecast of 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier, 13-16 to Rufus, and 10-13 near Arlington. Midday westerlies pick up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier with 15-18 to The Dalles. It’s likely the instability will have an impact in the afternoon – models suggest the wind will drop to 16-19 between Stevenson and Hood River and rise to gusty 20-25 from Mosier to Avery. Rufus: 15-18. Even those forecast wind speeds could be high if thunder develops. High temp: 84F.

Tuesday’s currently looking like 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier all day long. There’s a shot at slightly stronger wind if offshore high pressure can help out a bit extra. Wednesday: probably light and variable, but possibly light westerly. Thursday: long ways out, but possibly 21-24. After that, there’s a ton of disagreement in the future-cast. All the models are calling for all sorts of different outcomes. The operational GFS is the friendliest. It calls for (FINALLY!) solid offshore high pressure and NW flow over the region, the setup known to drive strong westerlies. Cross your fingers! Enjoy your Sunday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Wasco County Fair is this week. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
