Gorge Wind Forecast

The wind has just switched to westerly on this Sunday morning, as evidenced by the dark, foreboding brownish-grey cloud of smoke overhead. With a .05 gradient to start the day today and a frontal system moving in, we’ll see the wind pick up, fortunately not as much as predicted yesterday. By noon, we should have westerlies at 13-16 through the entire Gorge. The wind will pick to 15-18 ahead of the incoming rain and then back off as the rain hits.

Monday starts off with west wind at 5-10 in the western Gorge and 10-13 from Mosier eastward. The western Gorge is likely to stay rainy all day, leaving the wind from Cascade Locks to Viento in the 5-10 range. The Swell and Hood River area is questionable, and really depends on the clouds and rain; models currently think HR will be in the rain on Monday morning, so let’s call it 10-13. Areas of east of Hood River will pick up to 20-23 in the afternoon.

Tuesday looks rainy in the western Gorge with west wind at 7-10 or so, maybe less. The weather picture is quite complicated: a weak low will move inland to WA in the morning, and a very strong low will drop along the coast in the afternoon. This will limit the wind: 10-13 in the western Gorge and 20-23 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. That deep low pressure system moves onshore Tuesday night, causing the westerlies to pick up to 26-30 in the west and 30+ east of Hood River.

It’s worth noting, given the fire situation, that these wind speeds are for the river. Wind at higher elevations (ridgetops, for example) will be much stronger.

Random Morning Thoughts

I woke up late, so there’s no time for reflecting today. Have an awesome day, and enjoy the rain!!!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There’s a low, oppressive cloud of smoke above us this morning. If it weren’t smoky, it’d probably be cloudy, and if not, it’ll be cloudy later. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Rain starts up around 6pm. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Can you have rainbows in smoke? Monday starts with light rain and transitions to heavier rain in the afternoon. Temps will be near 50 early and 60 in the afternoon. Snow level 5000′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 98% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks rainy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Snow level 6500′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 45% chance of rainbows. Wednesday currently looks torrentially wet.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Underwood, and all other trails on Hood River County, Kreps, and SDS lands remain closed due to extreme fire danger. All ridgeline trails in Post Canyon, according to a reliable source, will be impacted by fire suppression efforts including cutting of 30-40′ wide firebreaks.

Falls Creek is now closed from the top due to fire. Everything you can ride along I-84 is currently closed or inaccessible. Open trails in the area: Syncline, Buck Creek, Nestor Peak, and anything along the 44 Road. McClellan Meadows trail and other trails that leave from the top of Old Man Pass are closed. Falls Creek Trail is open from the bottom but is closed above the Horse Camp. All campfires and smoking are now prohibited in the Mt. Hood National Forest and Gifford Pinchot, and the Mt. Hood Forest is now at IFPL 4.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
