Gorge Wind Forecast

A heat low over the Willy Valley today will turn the wind offshore, also known as easterly. That’ll make for some fine down-current/downwind paddling of various sorts. As for the wind, it’ll peak mid-morning at E 10-15 from Cascade Locks to Viento or so with light wind elsewhere. By early afternoon, the wind should back off to 7-10 in those locations and pick up to E 4-8 everywhere else, all the way out to John Day Dam. People have been asking about smoke. The answer is maybe, as the flow is NE and may keep the worst of the Substation Fire smoke to the south of us.

Looking at Monday, the heat low remains over the Willy Valley in the morning and then possibly shifts east in the afternoon. This gives us a calm start with west wind from mid-afternoon on. Models disagree on the strength of the wind, with the GFS liking 13-16ish and the Euro liking 20-23 or so.I’m not sure which way to lean for Monday, so take your pick. Either way, it looks like we’ll have wind from Stevenson to Hood River by 1pm and all the way out to The Dalles by 3pm.

The hottest weather, and therefore the heat-associated low pressure, shifts east of the Cascades for reals on Tuesday. That sets us up for west wind at 8-11 early from Stevenson to Swell and 13-16 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Once again the Euro likes stronger wind, giving us 19-22. Given the fact that the heat low is predicted to shift east, I’d vote for the euro on Tuesday afternoon. It’s looking like we’ll potentially see deeper marine clouds Wednesday night into Thursday, increasing the wind.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 5. Monday: 15-18. Tuesday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Sunday: 13-16 late. Monday: 16-19 late. Tuesday: 8-11+. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 20-25/10-15/15-20?, NW swell 5′ at 7 seconds. Monday: NW10/N10/20-25, NW 4′ @ 7. Tuesday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, NW 4′ @ 7.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things I’ve noticed in the work I do with clients, and also in the work that I’ve done on myself, is that it can sometimes be impossible to stop freaking out without help from another human being. One of my theories about this is that true crises are often related to a sense of isolation in the world. This being the case, it really is okay to reach out and ask for help. It shows that you understand what you need!

Now, we all know that we can’t always rely on friends, family, or partners to be there when we have a complete freakout. That’s why there are Crisis Lines. These magical help lines are not just for people who are feeling suicidal. It’s okay to call them when whatever’s going on is overwhelming.

Unfortunately, there’s quite a bit of stimga surrounding the choice to call a crisis line. Stigma is BS, in my opinion. Calling a crisis line means a couple of things: one, you know yourself well enough to understand that talking to someone is the thing that will help you feel better fast. Two, you have the courage to pick up the phone and ask for help.

Connecting with another person is often an antidote to panic, anxiety, and loneliness. Connecting with a stranger can sometimes be easier than calling a friend. Reach out – don’t suffer alone. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.
