Gorge Wind Forecast

Sunday morning’s starting out with partly cloudy sky due to a solid marine layer. As those clouds burn off, we’ll see westerlies fill back to Stevenson. A weak weather system this morning could result in gusty wind today, but you’ll want to get it while you can, because we’ll have light wind Monday and easterlies Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sunday’s early gradients were .11 and .04. High pressure is forecast to build over the region this afternoon, so the eastern Gorge isn’t the place to be today. We’ll have early westerlies at 23-26 at Viento and Moiser with gusty 18-22 most other locations. Stevenson will be lighter, as always, due to cloud cover. By late morning, we should see the wind rise to 24-27 from Viento to Moiser with Stevenson joining in once the clouds burn off. While this weather system is supposed to move through early, it could still put a damper on wind consistency and strength today near Swell and Hood River. Rowena to Doug’s will peak in the mid 20’s this afternoon. The eastern Gorge may see a bump to 16-20 this morning, but will likely fade to 10-13 or less this afternoon. River flow is 94,100 cfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Monday’s a transition day as high pressure builds inland and a heat low moves up along the coast. The day starts with light west gradients, maybe accompanied by westerlies at 5-8 from Stevenson to Viento. Maybe not. Anyway, it does look like the wind will go calm midday and turn to east 5-8 from Rooster to The Dalles in the afternoon.

Tuesday’s the first big east wind day of the summer: 30-35 from Rooster to Stevenson with 20-25 near Viento. Afternoon easterlies build to 8-12 from Swell to Arlington. The wind backs off some on Wednesday: E 20-25 in the morning and light and variable in the afternoon. With humidity moving in and temps maxing out in the mid 90’s, it’s going to feel mighty hot. Make plans to swim. The long-range forecast doesn’t contain all that much agreement, but it does appear a weak low pressure will set up off the southern Oregon coast for at couple of days later next week. Flow turns onshore in response, but significant instability and humidity will accompany the light-to=moderate westerlies.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Sunday: 20-25/25-30/30-40, W swell 5′ @ 11. Road and Mountain Biking

For road bikers: chip seal along Highway 30 from Mosier eastward just had a layer of sticky oil added to the top. Reports are that it could use some time to cure before it’s good for biking. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). The kids bike race is still on this Saturday morning at Family Man. As for Kreps/SDS lands, no word since the rain… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Events today starts with $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon. There are free kids art classes at Columbia Center for the Arts from 1 to 3, and the Hood River Zen meditation group meets from 3 to 5 a Hood River Foundation for Vibrant Living. Mt.
