Gorge Wind Forecast

I took yesterday off from the forecast. Ignoring the models for 24 hours allowed the models to come into agreement about Monday’s forecast. And they’ve come into agreement in a way that you’ll probably like – moderately strong westerlies for much of the day. Monday will be sandwiched between a light easterly day today and a bit of a conundrum on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we return to easterlies.

Sunday’s kicking off with easterlies at 10-15 between Rooster and Viento. Easterlies pick up to 15-20mph from Rooster to Viento for a few hours this morning and fade in the afternoon. By 2pm, the readings should be “light”, less than 10mph. River flow readings are 60-101kcfs this morning, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 83F.

A cold front approaches on Monday. It combines with offshore high pressure and inland heat for a solid day of westerlies. Expect 14-17 for Dawn Patrol from Viento to Swell. By late morning, you’ll find 24-27 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Afternoon westerlies dip to 17-21 from Stevenson to Swell, 21-24 from Hood River to Mosier, and rise to 25-29 from Lyle to Rufus. Stronger wind from Lyle to Rufus isn’t out of the question. Arlington should join at 20-23. High temp: 77F. Sunset: 6:31pm.

Tuesday starts with westerlies at 17-21 near Viento. Models suggest the wind will die off, but this is the kind of setup where reality often exceeds the models. Thank offshore high pressure for that. Cross your fingers, and we might have 17-21 for most of the day from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River. My fingers are crossed, for sure. High temp: 73F. Easterlies return on Wednesday. Enjoy the next few days!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened motorized use for trails in the NW Area (Post, Kingsley, Binn’s Hill). Other HRC trails are still closed. These trails are closed to all uses, and some might not have signage saying they are closed: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time.
