Gorge Wind Forecast

As far as I know, the Columbia River remains closed to all vessels (including you) between approximately Home Valley and the Narrows (River mile 154 to 158), unless you have the explicit permission of the Captain of the Port. You also must remain 500 yards from fire air support from Cascade Locks westward. In other words, it’s probably best if you don’t windsurf, kite, SUP, paddle any downwind floating object, or take out your sailboat anywhere along the Eagle Creek Fire.

As for the wind today, we had some nice marine clouds to start the day in the western Gorge, with scattered marine clouds near Hood River. The 7am gradient was .07 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc) with the river flow at 119kcfs and river temp at 69 degrees. A weak frontal system is moving through this morning and high pressure is building offshore. We’ll see west wind at 13-16 between Viento and the Wunderbar through midday with 5-10 further east. Given the clouds and jump start on desert heating, it’s possible we could see a period of 17-20 from Viento to the Wunderbar late morning. After that, the wind will slowly fade to 5-10 in the evening. The Stevenson to Home Valley area will see 7-10 early, 12-15 midday, and 5-10 in the evening.

Flow switches to easterly overnight, building to E 10-15 early Monday morning between Rooster Rock and Home Valley. By mid-morning, the wind will climb to 20-25 near Rooster and 15-20 in the Cascade Locks to Home Valley section of river. After 1pm, the wind will quickly fade, becoming calm after 5pm.

Tuesday starts off calm and glassy. As the thermal trough shifts to the east and a weak front approaches offshore, the wind will start to blow out of the west. We’ll see 12-15 between Rooster and Hood River by 11am. The wind will stay in that range west of Cascade Locks and build to gusty 21-24 between Cascade Locks and The Dalles after 2pm, holding overnight.

The long-range forecast suggests the following max windspeeds for the rest of the week, subject to change: W 24-27 Wednesday, W 26-30 Thursday, W 12-15 Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m a big fan of mindfulness of the body. One of the reasons is that being mindful of physical and physiological happenings allows me to get a handle on my thoughts and emotions more quickly. When I can do this, I suffer less.

Our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations work together to create stories about what is happening in our lives. By interrupting one of these factors, we can interrupt the others. My personal belief is that our physical sensations are the initial factor in what can become a painful emotional feedback loop. Other people have different ideas.

If, for example, you carry a lot of muscle tension, you might also find yourself wary, nervous, angry, or afraid. You might think people are not trustworthy. More than likely, your system automatically interprets muscle tension as a sign of threat, even if the tension is a long-ingrained pattern.

If you can study this tension without placing interpretations on it, you can compare it to actual reality and get a handle on whatever thoughts or expectations it’s generating. Same goes for any physical sensation that we automatically link to an emotion. This can be fun to play with, and can be an entertaining game of “hack the mind”.

Your throat is tight. Are you sad, or is your throat just tight? You’re breathing fast. Are you afraid, or just breathing fast? The closer you can get to the actual in-the-moment sensation, without the interpretation, the more free you will be from a spiral of associated thoughts and emotions. Mind hacks are fun. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Underwood, and all other trails on Hood River County, Kreps, and SDS lands remain closed due to extreme fire danger. Everything you can ride along I-84 is currently closed or inacessible. Open trails in the area: Syncline, Buck Creek, Nestor Peak, and anything along the 44 Road or Highway 35. The air quality has been much better once you get away from the actual Gorge, so consider a drive to get away from the smoke before you hop on a bike.

Upcoming Events

Coming up next weekend, Special Olympics has a paper shredding fundraiser at Rite Aid Saturday morning. The Gorge Kids Triathlon is at the Hood River Watervfront Park on Sunday morning.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
