Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Oh thank the stars, there’s finally a pattern change showing up in the models. It’s not ’til next Friday, but finally something will change. Until then, have hope.

Today looks mostly cloudy on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be around 9000′. Wind will be light this morning, building to NNW 20-25 in the afternoon.

Monday looks partly cloudy early, becoming cloudy by mid-morning. The FAF will be 9000′ all day. Wind will be W 10 early, W 15 midday and W 25 in the afternoon and evening.

Tuesday looks cloudy early, becoming clear in the afternoon. The FAF will be 7500′ early, dropping to 6500′ in the afternoon as a weak cold front swings through. It’s unlikely we’ll see precip with this system, but we may see a few sprinkles. Wind on Tuesday will be W 25 early, W 35 midday and WNW 40 in the afternoon.

If nothing changes as we get closer to the scenario portrayed in the extended model runs, Friday brings a solid weather system to the PNW. At this point, it looks like the snow level will be around 5000′, which is better than anything above 5000′, but not so great for Skibowl or the base of Crystal. Anyway, models currently show around 1” of moisture with this system. That’s good. Really good. And models show a second system on Saturday. Even better.

Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the end of next week.

Gorge Weather

We have a low cloud deck (The Nothing) in the Gorge this morning, and above that are some high clouds. We’ll see temps rise to the low 40’s today under cloudy sky, most likely. Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy, with temps in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. Tuesday looks cloudy and warmer, with temps in the mid 40’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a light east gradient this morning, just .03, and that’s going to switch around this afternoon. Expect easterlies at 10-13 this morning, going to westerly 1-10 this afternoon. Monday brings east wind at 15-18 and Tuesday brings stronger west wind, perhaps 21-24, as a cold front swings through.

Road and Mountain Biking

I keep forgetting to tell you that Sandy Ridge is reportedly epic now. It’s a bit of a drive in the winter, sure, but everyone is saying the dirt is worth it. If you’ve got the better part of a day, head over and ride the rippingest of rippy trails. And for you road bikers, the roads are a lot less icy this morning than they were yesterday.
