Saturday. Whoopdee work party this morning. Hospital Hill and Whoopdee have reopened.

Today, although not windy right off the bat, represents your best chance to get on the water for the next several days. We’re in a holding pattern this morning as a cold front approaches Oregon. When that happens this afternoon, the wind will pick up, but you’ll want to be ready to chase it. Expect westerlies at 15-18 by early afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’s. As the front moves closer, we’ll see a short-lived (90 minutes or less) burst of stronger central Gorge wind in the mid 20’s. After that, the wind will pick up to gusty, up-and-down 25-29 east of Mosier, possibly east of Doug’s. Given the setup, it’s most likely you’ll find the steadiest wind way out east at Arlington, and possibly also at Avery. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with a few leftovers at 7-10 or a touch more. The westerlies won’t last long; by midday the river will be glassy, and by evening we’ll have light easterlies.

Monday starts off with light west wind and picks up to gusty, up-and-down 15-18 or a touch more from Stevenson to The Dalles. As of right now, Tuesday looks like a light wind day and Wednesday looks like east wind at 23-26 at Rooster, not quite enough to get me to stop on the way to school!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking about curiosity this morning. The topic came to me as I was reading an email from one of my professors telling me to, “Slow down.” I’ve heard the same thing from a couple of my therapists. The connection got me wondering what it was I was doing that was so unusual that three important people have commented on it. After all, I’m pretty dang happy and I spend a lot of time relaxing and being good to myself. I don’t feel like I’m moving fast!

Self-discovery and education are both activities driven by curiosity. Personal growth is an exercise in following curiosity about the inner world. Education, for the most part, is about following curiosity about the outer world. To succeed in either, your curiosity must be engaged. Otherwise, the tasks become burdensome and off-putting.

I have come to the conclusion that my therapists and professor are seeing the culmination of a curiosity positive feedback loop. I LOVE learning, and learning feeds on itself. The more we investigate our world, the more things we find that we don’t understand. We did this as children, following these curiosity connect-the-dots by asking, “Why, why, why?”

Many of us have our curiosity crushed as we grow. We stop asking “why”, and we stop looking for answers. But we can revive our curiosity. Here’s how: The next time you find yourself wondering “Why?” about something that crosses your path, investigate it. And when something during that investigation intrigues you, investigate it. Make a list of things that spark your curiosity, and set aside a little time to do some Googling.

This process is Lifelong Learning. It’ll keep you more engaged in life. It’ll teach you about yourself and people around you. It will make you vibrant and fully alive and able to win at Jeopardy. Well, maybe not that last one. But that doesn’t mean exploring your interests isn’t worthy. Try it out. Do some research on the things that make you curious, and forget about slowing down. Let’s all feed our curiosity fires and speed things up!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, and it’s only going to get cloudier and cloudier, and then the clouds will start falling on your head in the form of rain. Expect temps in the low 60’s this morning and mid 70’s this afternoon with light wind early and moderate to strong wind late. The rain, possibly heavy, will start around 2pm or 3pm, giving us a 34% chance of rainbows.

We may see a few leftover sprinkles tomorrow morning as high pressure builds in, but the day will become increasingly sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 3% chance of morning rainbows. 17% chance of morning Nothing.

Monday looks mostly sunny with high clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows. The rest of the week looks warm and dry.

Road and Mountain Biking

Today is a very exciting day for mountain bikers. First, there is a work party on the Whoopdee Trail this morning at 9am. Meet at the trailhead, and bring tools. Next, the fire closure has been lifted on SDS and Kreps lands, meaning Whoopdee and Hospital Hill have reopened. Yay! The Badger Lake Fire has been contained, but it’s unclear what’s open and closed up there. You can read the forest closure notice and see if you can tell. They use numbers, not names, and I, quite frankly, am not inspired to go look them all up!

In road biking news, you will enjoy tomorrow a lot, as light wind and partly cloudy sky greet your road biking plans. Today looks rather windy and rainy in the afternoon, so skip the afternoon spandex session. In other bike news, there’s a work party on the 170 extension next Saturday and there’s a Cross Crusade race in Cascade Locks next Sunday.

Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too.
