Friday. There’s a work party on the Whoopdee Trail at 9am Saturday morning. Be there or be square.

I found this morning’s wind setup rather interesting: Rooster Rock was reading 25, and Steven’s Locks was reading 0. Zero. Interesting. At 7am, the gradient was E .06 (pdx-dls) and the river temp was 64 degrees. 6030 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday and 841 Steelhead made it past the dam. And if you head to Doug’s fish stand at Windance, you can get bulk pricing on purchases of 20lbs or more of fish to freeze for the winter. And once you freeze that fish for 7 days, you can pull it out and make lox like Lisa and I do! Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Now… where was I going with this? Oh, right. Wind forecast. Expect light east wind this morning. As a weak frontal system moves through this afternoon, the westerlies will pick up. This system is trending slower and slower on each model run, which means the wind will be later and later to arrive. As of right now, models suggest 2pm as the wind start time. Expect gusty, up-and-down 13-16 or a touch more from Steven’s Locks to Mosier with 20-23 near Rowena and 23-26 from Avery east to Arlington this afternoon.

Tomorrow sees a stronger frontal system move through. We’ll start off the day with light and variable wind, and those light conditions should last through early afternoon. Sometime after 1pm, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 15-18 (with a short burst of 23-26 possible) from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. East of there, we’ll see gusty 25-29, all the way to Arlington.

Sunday starts off with leftover westerlies at 10-13, quickly fading to light and variable wind as high pressure fills in across the PNW. Another frontal system is slated to appear on Monday, for LTV early and gusty 20-23 in the afternoon.

No wind for Jones n’ Sauvie’s for the next three days. Out on the coast, you’ll have southerly wind for the next three days. Expect a period of S 25-35 today with combined seas at 14′. Tomorrow looks like S 40 with a 10′ swell at 13 seconds. Sunday looks like S 10-15 or less with 10′ @ 13.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot about crying and tears over the last 48 hours or so. It wasn’t okay or safe to cry in my house when I was growing up. It is, however, okay to cry in my grad school program, and I love that. We’re all adults now (even you!), and our tears belong to us. Crying feels lovely. I like to cry, and I hope you do to. After I cry, I feel more relaxed and more able to handle whatever triggered the crying. Maybe you’ve had the same experience…

As I was thinking about crying this morning, I visited the Wikipedia article on crying, always a good place to start, and usually a good place to find further reading. There’s a lot of fascinating information in that article, including a tidbit saying that the composition of emotional tears is different than the composition of other types of tears. Whoa. That’s cool!

Our society tends to shame people who shed tears (unless someone just died), especially men who shed tears. Discouraging crying is a terrible thing, in my opinion. Nobody knows for sure why we cry. It’s just something we do. It’s natural. It serves some sort of evolutionary purpose.

So, if you feel you’re going to cry, allow it to happen (assuming it’s safe to do it where you are). Or allow it to happen later. Because whatever those tears are about, they’re okay. Crying is natural. Crying is cathartic. Crying is perfectly okay. Now, go have yourself an awesome cry and an awesome rest of the day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning, and will probably remain cloudy for much of the day with a slight chance of sprinkles after noon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s (and muggy) early and in the mid 70’s (and muggy) this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 90% chance of a colorful sunset and 4% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off partly or mostly cloudy and muggy and ends up rainy after 2pm. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late. 45% chance of a colorful sunrise, 11% chance of a colorful sunset, 17% chance of rainbows.

Sunday starts partly cloudy with a chance of sprinkles and gets sunnier in the afternoon. Temps will be right around 50 early and right around 70 in the afternoon. 78% chance of a colorful sunrise, 10% chance of a colorful sunset. 22% chance of morning rainbows. Light wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s a work party to clear the uphill section of the Whoopdee tomorrow morning. Meet at the Whoopdee parking lot at 9am. Bring rakes and trail tools and plan on working for a few hours or more if you like.

It still looks like there’s going to be enough rain on Saturday to impact the trails (and maybe fire season), so stay tuned for TackAlerts (tentatively issued for Sunday afternoon) and land reopening announcements. In the meantime, enjoy the last (hopefully) of the dust. Also, the road biking looks light-windy this morning and tomorrow morning and light-windy all day Sunday.

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. McCurdy Farms – the secret fruit stand not on the Fruit Loop map. Visit today.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and that means we’re all too late for the Kickstand Coffee Run. That one leaves Kickstand at 7am, goes 4.1 miles, and returns for a free coffee and a donut. Normally I’d be all over a free cup of coffee and a donut, but 7am is really early, so I’ve only made the run – actually, it’s more of a jog – once. But it’s a nice group of people, and I recommend you do it!

Coming up tomorrow afternoon, it’s the most exciting event we’ve seen in a long, long time: RAIN! Before that happens, you can go jogging with the HR Running Club at 8am in Post Canyon (wtf is up with all these super-early runs?), and you can join a cool group of people and a couple of monastics for a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. That runs from 1pm to 5pm.

Coming up Sunday, it’s alternative sports for all: Free yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 9am (that class is AWESOME!), free yoga at Pure Yoga at 4pm (Christian-themed, and open to all faiths), and free yoga at Root Down at 6pm. Hey Flow Yoga, I’m calling you out: you have no free yoga classes at this time. It’s time to step it up! Also Sunday: ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30 and pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm.

Have an awesome day today!
