Random Morning Thoughts

I am a person who is prone to making mistakes, both in my personal life and in my public life. I am also a person who tends (less than before, but still a bit) to fall into a shame spiral in response to the worst of my mistakes. Some of you may see yourself in this pattern, yes?

When mistakes happen, we often punish ourselves. When others make mistakes, our response is often to punish them for making a mistake. We tell them they were wrong. We demand they not repeat the mistake. When we do this, we are forgetting that most adults (and many kids) who make mistakes are quite capable of self-punishment. We generally don’t need to add another layer, because shame, regret, and guilt are often enough to get people to change their own behavior and avoid repeating a mistake.

Research shows that punishment isn’t nearly as effective as talking through situations. Having a conversation about how the mistake impacted the mistakee and exploring future responses is much more effective than an approach that gives the message, “You fucked up. Stop it. Don’t do it again!”

You can apply this to yourself as well. Allow the shame and guilt and regret to be there, and ask yourself what you’ve learned from this situation. How will you proceed differently in the future so you don’t make the same mistake again? Take heart in your future self’s capabilities, and be kind to your current self. You’ll never be mistake-free, but you can keep learning. Have an awesome day.

Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

First off, Hood River County has a trail work party on the 140 today. Meet at Post Flats Staging Area (top of Mitchell Ridge) at 9am to give back to your trails. N ext, given that yesterday was a nice day, you can probably ride Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill (cows are out – NO DOGS), Columbia Hills, Sandy Ridge, or Kitchen Sink. The Gorge 400 still has large patches of snow, so pass on that one. Today’s road biking should be spectacular: we’re looking at sunshine, a high near 60, and light and variable wind.

Upcoming Events

Today is Saturday. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am. There’s a free yoga class at 10:30am at Pure Yoga in The Dalles and in Hood River. There’s a trail work party at 9am in Post Canyon. Meet at Post Flats Staging area. Sunday is Easter. Sunday is the last day of skiing this season at Skibowl, and riding is free. They’d appreciate it if you’d bring four cans of food as a donation.

Have an awesome day today!
