Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday – welcome to the weekend! The Gorge Downwind Champs participants will be downwinding all over the place west of Hood River for the next week or so. Keep any eye out for folx coming from upwind rather than crosswind. There will be plenty of wind for all the activities today, yet again. This is the lightest wind day of the next five, but the westerlies should still touch 20mph this afternoon.

Looking into the details, we have ridging (higher pressure) pushing in from the Intermountain West. That’s knocked the gradients down some. Offshore high pressure, cooler air in Portland, and sunshine in the desert will combine today. Keep an eye on the late evening session for a chance at stronger wind. Westerlies start at 15-18 from Viento to Swell with 5-10 at Stevenson and eastward to Rufus. It’s a little windier at Arlington, but don’t be tempted; it’ll drop to light and variable today. Westerlies hold at 15-18 through early afternoon from Viento to Swell. Stevenson and Hood River join late morning. Mosier is likely as well. East of there: not much more than 5-10 until the evening. Late in the day, westerlies bump to 20-23 between Stevenson and Hood River with 18-21 near Rowena and 15-18 at Rufus. East of there: nothing. River flow is 122kcfs. River temp is 70F. High temp forecast for Hood River: 82F.

A weak low moves from the offshore waters towards Vancouver Island on Sunday. Ridging continues to affect surface pressure in the eastern Gorge. That also drives temps up about 5F. Morning westerlies will be 17-20 from Viento to Swell with 9-12 everywhere else. Afternoon: 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier, 15-18 near Rowena, 10-13 in the Maryhill stretch, and light/variable wind to the east. High temp: upper 80’s.

Broad troughiness along the coast on Monday combines with the affects of the inland ridge for a gusty day of wind. Models suggest 21-24 in the morning and 23-26 midday, strongest in the Corridor. There’s a hint of 25-28 from Lyle east to Rufus in the afternoon with a steep drop in speeds in the western Gorge. It’s quite likely the wind will underperform these numbers. High temp: 85F.

Slightly cooler weather and stronger wind (27-31) is in the forecast for Tuesday. Wednesday looks like 25-28. Lesser westerlies are predicted for the latter half of next week, but still should hit 20mph. Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Saturday: 15-20/15-20/30-35, W swell 5′ at 9. Sunday: 15-20/15-20/30-35, W 5′ @ 9. Monday: NW10/N10-15/N25-30, W 3′ @ 8. Jones Saturday: 11-14. Sunday: 18-22. Monday: 13-16. Sauvie’s Saturday: 11-14. Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
