Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate to strong westerlies stick around for the next three days. After that, details of the forecast are unclear, but the general picture is a showery lull early in the week followed by hints of stronger wind for the second half of next week.

Starting with today: the morning wind at Viento (22mph, thanks iWind/iKite) is reflective of our morning gradients, even if no other locations are. The day starts with 0.09 and 0.02. Stay close to home! Westerlies take a while to get started; by midday, most locations will just be in the low double digits with the exception of Viento. Afternoon wind takes help from thermal gradients and rises to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 206kcfs, river temp is 54F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Sunday starts with 15-20 at Viento and 5-10 everywhere else. By mid-morning, the wind builds to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. You may need to drive a bit in the afternoon. A front well offshore and a low moving into central BC knocks the gusto out of the western Gorge. The wind drops to gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. From Mosier to Rufus you’ll find gusty 24-27. High temp: 85F.

A deeper marine layer arrives in Portland on Monday morning thanks to that weak/dry front. The day starts with 21-24 from Viento to Hood River with 24-27 at Mosier and 12-15 east to Arlington. Afternoon wind builds to 26-30 from Mosier to Threemile with 14-17 west of Mosier. This is, to some extent, driven by another approaching front. Expect gusty conditions.

Showers are in the forecast Tuesday and Wednesday. That shifts the wind out into the desert, where you’ll probably find 20-something westerlies. Models hint at much stronger wind Thursday through Saturday, but that’s far from guaranteed at this point. Enjoy this warm and windy weekend!
