Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

I hope everyone had a great week. I’m so happy to be back forecasting for you! Another round of strong easterlies is forecast today before a switch back to west wind on Sunday. It’s that time of year – back and forth easterlies and westerlies. That said, much of next week is currently forecast to bring westerlies. Let’s take a look.

Saturday starts with a heat low along the coast and strong inland high pressure. The low retrogrades to the west and forms a closed low offshore, and the inland high retreats and lessens in intensity. That changes this morning’s gradients from E .20 (big!) to something lesser this afternoon. Easterlies drop in response. You’ll find 30-40mph near Rooster this morning with 30-35 from Stevenson to Home Valley and 20-25 at Viento. The wind drops rapidly after noon and lands in the 20-25 range from Rooster to Stevenson with gusty 15-20ish at Viento. River flow readings are 112-150kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 89F.

Sunday starts with light and variable or very light west wind. By late morning, the wind picks up to gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon: gusty 18-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s with light wind out in the desert. High temp: 90F. An offshore low on Monday keeps relatively cool air on the west side. The desert will be plenty warm. Expect 18-21 to start from Viento to Hood River or Mosier with 11-14 eastward to Arlington. The wind eventually (mid-afternoon) picks up to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 81F.

Assuming nothing significant changes in the forecast, the offshore low sticks around in some form or other through much of this week. This keeps cool air on the west side and some form of thermal gradients across the Cascade. For the most part, westerlies will be in the upper teens to low 20’s with high temps under 80F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
