Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Saturday’s going to be a snowy one on the mountain. While the overnight snow totals were lower than forecast, I’m still thinking we’ll get enough new snow today to refresh the slopes. We then have a dry day on Sunday followed by light snow or a snow/rain mix Monday into Tuesday.

For Saturday, expect a blustery Leap Day on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 1000′ in the evening, and 500′ after the precip stops tonight. About 0.5” to 0.6” water value (WV) arrives during the day, for 5-7” of dry new snow. Another 0.1” WV bring us an additional inch this evening before the sky clears. Wind will be W 30 in the morning, NW 30 in the afternoon, and light-and-variable after midnight.

Sunday looks clear all day with high clouds overnight. The free air freezing level will be 500′ early, 1500′ midday, and 500′ in the evening. No snowfall. Wind: LTV early, NW 10 during the day, NW 25 in the evening, and NNW 40-45 overnight.

Monday starts with light snowfall. The incoming weather system is right on the edge for snow or rain; 5000′ temps look to run between -2C and +4C, a wide range that makes for a difficult forecast. The snow level will be 500′ early, 5500′ mid-morning, as high as 6000′ in the evening, and back to 5000′ overnight. About 0.2” WV falls during the day, for an inch or so of new. Same overnight, with a good chance of alternating snow and rain. Wind: NNW 45 early, NW 35 midday, NW 40 overnight.

Light snowfall continues on Tuesday with the snow level at 5000′ or so. It appears we’ll get 1-3” in the 24 hour period. Wind will be in the W/NW 30-40 range. Similar conditions continue Wednesday with the snow level around 3500′.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re looking for westerlies, you’ll be happy. They’re not going anywhere for a while. For Saturday, we starts with W 8-11. By mid to late morning, the wind picks up to 18-23 from The Dalles to Arlington. Afternoon wind looks like 10-13 in the west with gusty 24-28 from Rowena to Arlington. Sunday starts with 10-13 through the whole Gorge. The wind picks up to relatively steady 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Another weather system on Monday drives another round of gusty westerlies. The day starts with 25-30 in the far west and 13-16 in the eastern Gorge. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 25-29 in the west and slightly steadier 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.
