Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A sunny and warm Friday gives way to a colder, snowier weekend. Looking at the extended forecast, it appears that next week will have on-and-off light to moderate snowfall. That forecast is really dependent on where the bulk of the PNW’s moisture sets up. Until then, let’s look at what is known: the next three days.

For Friday, expect clear sky on the mountain until mid-afternoon, when clouds and snow move in and the wind picks up. The snow level will be 9000′ during the day, 3500′ when the snow arrives, and 1500′ overnight. The snow starts around 4pm, and 0.3-0.4” WV falls overnight. That gives us 3-4” of decent-quality, wind-affected snow. Wind speeds: SW 10-15 early, SW 30-50 in the afternoon, W 40-50 overnight, and W 30 after midnight.

Saturday looks moderately snowy and windy during the day with light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ all day. The freezing level drops to 0-500′ overnight after the precipitation stops. About 0.4” WV falls during the day, for 4-5” of powder. Another 0.1” WV falls overnight, for another inch of new. Wind: W 30 early, NW 25 for the bulk of the day, NW 10 after midnight.

Sunday looks clear or partly cloudy all day. Light snow moves in after midnight. The freezing level will be 0′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and the snow level will be about 500′ after midnight. Just a trace of snow falls in the wee hours of Monday. Wind: NW 10 most of the day, NW 30 by midnight, NNW 40 after midnight.

Monday looks snowy and wind. The snow level will be 500′ early, quickly rising to 3500′ in the afternoon and 4500′ overnight. About 0.2” WV falls during the day, for a couple inches of snow. Another 0.4” or so falls overnight, for 3-4” of denser, wind-affected new snow. Wind: NNW 40 (could affect some lifts) early, NW 35 in the afternoon, WNW 45 overnight. As of this morning, it does appear that snow will continue on and off during next week, but models are far from clear on the details. Enjoy the great conditions this weekend!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Calm wind on Friday morning gives way to westerlies in the afternoon. West wind sticks around for the next five days or so. For Friday, expect calm weather for a few hours in the morning. Westerlies pick up to 21-24 by noon from Stevenson to Mosier. As a cold front approaches this afternoon, the wind picks up to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to Arlington with 20-23 near Hood River.

Saturday starts with west 7-10 through the whole Gorge. Showers keep the western Gorge at 12-15. Rowena to Arlington picks up to relatively steady 24-27 in the afternoon. While models are suggesting 12-15 in the Gorge on Sunday, I suspect the wind will peak at 21-24 from Mosier to The Dalles.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

It’s going to be a warm and lovely day for a ride. With temps near freezing, the soil above 1000′ will like be impacted by freeze-thaw. Please don’t ride there, or you’ll do trail damage. Please don’t ride through the liquefied trail tread. Turn around and go home and get your road or gravel bike so you don’t do permanent trail damage!
