Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a nearly-calm start to the day today with westerlies in the 5-10 range through the entire Gorge. This is a good thing if you’re going fishing, and so are the most recent fish counts: 7807 Chinook and 2284 Steelhead over Bonneville. I’d recommend heading to the fish stand in the Windance parking lot to get some of this fish! Anyway, the wind will pick up a little bit this afternoon; we’ll see a slow build to up-and-down 13-16 between Viento and Mosier. Areas west of Viento will likely stay lighter due to sprinkles, clouds and rainbows.

Sunday starts off with very light westerlies. Although the models aren’t suggesting much wind at all, I think we’ll have 10-13 in the afternoon between Cascade Locks and Hood River, maybe to Mosier too.

Monday brings the approach of a weak frontal system from the west. This will bump up the afternoon winds a bit from the weekend speeds: we’ll have westerlies at 8-12 in the morning and gusty 18-22 in the afternoon between Stevenson and The Dalles.

Tuesday currently looks light and variable and Wednesday and Thursday are currently schedule to have east wind in the 25-30 range along with sunshine.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking that there are going to be a lot of two-day forecasts coming up in the near future, at least until we go into ski season. Although I feel a responsibility to keep everyone updated and to provide the promised service, I am also trying to balance school, work, and life. So, let’s plan on that unless there’s something important in the forecast (wind, snow, etc.)

Creating this balance is difficult for all of us, I think. Guilt serves to keep us connected to others in a responsible way, but it can also fool us into putting the needs of others before our own needs for self-care.

How often do you place the needs of others before your needs in such a way that you end up less able to be fully present for those same people? It is a tricky balance, but the truth of the matter is that we can’t be at our best as a friend, partner, or family member if we don’t take care of ourselves.

So, the question now is this: “What are you going to do to take care of yourself today?” If you say “laundry”, you’ll have to try again. If you said, “exercise” or some other healthy thing, you pass. Take care of yourself so you can be more there for others. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The sky is overcast this morning and will probably remain that way today as a weak front offshore sends high clouds this way. There might be a few sprinkles too, especially to the west and up from HR. Temps will be near 50 early and in the upper 60’s this afternoon. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday also looks cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Monday looks cloudy too with a chance of sprinkles in the evening. Temps will be near 50 early and near 70 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s a lot of amazing dirt out there right now, so get out and get some! Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Post and Underwood have all reopened. The only thing that might not be rideable is Gunsight, due to the fact that 8-10 inches of snow fell at 6000′ last week. Road biking should be good all weekend with nothing more than light west wind to contend with.

Upcoming Events

While it’s not an official event, we can probably call this opening weekend of mountain bike season – the dirt is as good as it gets all across the Gorge, and Whoopdee Trail, Underwood, Post Canyon and Hospital Hill have all reopened to non-motorized use. Post Canyon has reopened to motorized use, but other Hood River County lands remain closed to moto.

There’s a trail run this morning at 8am in Post Canyon to celebrate Post being open, and remember, pedestrians and uphill bike traffic have the right of way over downhillers.

Tomorrow’s events start off with a fundraiser version of the Kickstand Coffee run – show up at 9am and make a donation to the Hood River cross country teams, run 4 miles, and you’ll get a cup of coffee and a donut. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow and pickup touch rugby for kids and adults.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
