Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s glassy as could be here in Hood River this morning, and the forecast isn’t for much more the rest of today. Still, it’ll be muggy, and a great day to get in the river. Models suggest stronger wind on Sunday and Monday, but complications (we’ll talk more later) will likely have the actual wind under-performing the models.

Looking at Saturday, it’s pretty uncomplicated. Gradients are E 0.01 (pdx-dls) and W 0.02 (dls-psc) to start the morning. Break out the ski boat near Hood River – the wind looks glassy between the Hatch and Doug’s all day. We could see a wee bit of wind after 5pm today: gusty 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River and E 10-15 between The Dalles and Arlington. Don’t count on it. It’s driven by a low moving overhead, and this situation will destabilize the atmosphere and make the wind unreliable. High temp on Saturday: 77F. Muggy.

Offshore low pressure combines with an atmospheric river, a cold front from the SW, and very hot weather in Idaho on Sunday for a complex weather setup. The day starts with light westerlies, 10mph or less, west of The Dalles with 10-13 east of The Dalles. That holds through 11am or so. Idaho’s heat drops the surface pressure in the afternoon. This is not mirrored as strongly in the upper levels. What does appear up above is atmospheric instability. While the GFS predicts 26-35 between Lyle and Arlington in the afternoon (western Gorge stays light), that seems overblown given the low offshore and potential for thunderstorms. Let’s call it gusty 23-28 between Lyle and Arlington and celebrate if it’s more than that. High temp: 76F and very muggy.

We’ll still have offshore low pressure on Monday, and we’ll still have help from Idaho’s heat low in the afternoon. Again, this isn’t a great setup. Rain is also possible. It’s almost certain in the western gorge in the morning and likely east of The Dalles from late afternoon on through the evening. Early morning wind will be dead calm most places. By mid-morning, westerlies build to gusty 14-18 from Mosier to Avery. Afternoon that, it’s a slow build to a questionable prediction of 27-31 (Avery-Arlington) by the GFS. Given the overall setup and potential for rain, another day of gusty 23-26 is more likely. High temp will be 73F. Muggy.

Models keep some sort of offshore low pressure around through Wednesday-ish. They’re currently hinting at a return to offshore high pressure, marine clouds in Portland, and heat in the desert (aka: Classic Gorge Setup) on Friday or Saturday. Have a fabulous weekend and a wonderful week!
