Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The weather on Mt. Hood on Friday ended up being more in line with the 850mb forecast than the sounding forecast, turning the precip to a mix of rain, snow and snain. Temps have dropped a bit this morning, but the 850mb models show borderline temps again today and tomorrow. It does look like temps will drop late tomorrow, giving the mountain a chance to rack up some snow accumulation.

For Saturday, the snow level will start around 4500′ and bounce around between 4000′ and 6000′. Not a lot of moisture will fall during the day – perhaps .1” max – for less than 1” of snow or mixed precip. Heavier precip moves in tonight, dropping about .5” water value (WV) on the mountain. This will probably be mixed precip that becomes more snowy late, for 2-3” of snow. Wind will be WSW 30 early, SW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 after midnight.

Sunday sees snowfall during the day, a chance of mixed precip in the evening, and snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5500′ in the evening, and then it will fall to 1500′ after midnight. About .5” WV falls during the day, for 4-5” of dense snow. Another .6” falls overnight, possible mixed with rain at first and then switching to increasingly dry snow. 3-4” snowfall. Wind will be SW 101-5 early, SSW 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 30 after midnight.

Monday looks windy and snowy. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. About .3” WV falls during the day, for 3-4” powder. Another .4” falls overnight, for 4-5” powder. Wind will be W 30-35 all day, picking up to WNW 45 after midnight.

Tuesday sees orographic snow showers mixed with sunbreaks in the morning and clear sky in the afternoon. A couple inches of snow will fall in the morning. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon. Clear sky overnight may take the free air freezing level as low as 0′ by Wednesday morning. Wind Tuesday will be WNW 45 early (potentially problematic for lifts), slowly fading to WNW 25 in the afternoon and SW 20 after midnight. Wednesday through Friday looks dry and warmer.

Random Morning Thoughts

My cat decided that 3:30am was a good time to flop down on my head this morning. Therefore, I will use that as an excuse to not write a reflection. Ha. May you be well. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

The Northwest remains in an active weather pattern for the next few days, and that will continue driving gusty west wind through the Gorge. For Saturday, the day starts off with light westerlies. Monday sees a strong, compact low drop into eastern Washington. The western Gorge will be rainy, or at least showery, with gusty 15-18. The Mosier to Arlington stretch will have gusty 26-30 all day on Monday. Tuesday looks like 27-32 east of Mosier all day.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s too wet to ride anywhere this morning without damaging the trails. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, and that means NO DOGS. Even your dog! If you want to ride road bike or grind some gravel, the farther east you go the more likely you will be to find dry weather. Sunday just looks wet everywhere.

Upcoming Events

Saturday and Sunday is the Monster and the Sea 24 hour paddle race to support local families hit by cancer. There’s a free half-day meditation retreat from 1-5pm at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday. Sunday is customer appreciation & ski free day at Skibowl. They’d much appreciate it if you’d bring four cans of food for Portland’s Sunshine Division.

Also Sunday: there’s by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 11am, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm. Dirty Fingers has a mixed-surface ride that leaves the shop at 9am.
