Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re off to a cool, cloudy, and relatively windy start for Saturday, even in areas that are under the clouds. Get on it today, because we’re looking at light wind on Sunday and light easterlies on Monday and Tuesday. Your next chance for westerlies is Wednesday when the next heat wave breaks down. Saturday morning’s marine clouds weren’t past Hood River when I woke up, but they surged further inland over the last 90 minutes. Despite this, westerlies are churning up little whitecaps in front of my house. Early pressures were 30.02/29.91/29.82 for gradients of 0.11 and 0.09. Go wherever you want today for wind! Early readings were 26-30ish from Mosier to Threemile. That seems like a fair forecast for the rest of the day as well. Models hint that areas east of Rufus may drop off to the mid 20’s for a bit early afternoon before returning to the upper 20’s. Now, let’s look at the western Gorge. Clouds this morning have the wind speeds in the upper teens to low 20’s. Models suggest we’ll have 17-20 this morning and 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River this afternoon. River flow readings this morning are 120-151kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecasts are 71F for Hood River and 75F for Arlington where “patchy blowing dust” is forecast. If you’re looking for a shopping experience this morning, waterman Dan Gavere’s annual multi-sport yard sale is today. 1704 Orchard Road, 9am-1pm. High pressure builds inland on Sunday. We start the day with 11-14 or so from Stevenson to Swell, but that will quickly shut down. Models say the wind will be calm from midday on as temps equalize over the Cascades. We could see a late 11-14 thermal after 5pm, but no promises. High temp: 80F. Gradients turn offshore on Monday. The day starts calm, picks up to E15-20 from Rooster to Viento for a couple of hours, and then drops to 10mph or less. Near Hood River, the wind should be calm all day. Easterlies look a little stronger and longer-lasting on Tuesday. Westerlies should return in the 17-20ish range on Wednesday. Note: temps will be 90+ Monday through Wednesday. Have a great day on the river today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

As of Monday, 8/17, the following trails are closed due to fire danger: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and andy lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
