Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday, and it’s a rest day! The lightest wind we’ve had in a good long while will allow you to take a break or switch to a different activity today. Westerlies return in the 20ish zone for Sunday and Monday before possibly spiking a bit higher on Tuesday.

Saturday kicks off with the last day of the Hood River county Fair and the first light-wind day. Take advantage of that combo! Early gradients were 0.06 (pdx-dls) and 0.00 (dls-psc). Viento was the only place windy early; it was reading 15-20. That’s really your only chance today. The wind drops below 10mph everywhere during the day (light and variable east of Mosier) and holds until early evening. Late-day westerlies, after 5pm or so, pick up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow is 129kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 94F.

Sunday gets you back on the river. Temps will still be hot, but they’ll be down just enough in the west and up just enough in the east to nudge the wind speeds up. Dawn brings 14-17 from Viento to Swell with light westerlies at Stevenson and to the east of Swell. By late morning, the wind picks up to 18-21 from Stevenson to Hood River. Light and variable wind is the forecast through late afternoon east of Hood River, and you may want to avoid the desert anyway – temps will be just below 100F near Biggs. You will have that option if you like the idea of blow dryer wind. Westerlies pick up to gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus after 4pm and hold through sunset. Arlington stays light. High temp: 91F.

Monday starts clear and ends high overcast with highs in the upper 80’s. Westerlies will be in the 20-23 range from Viento to Swell early and Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. Lyle to Doug’s join mid afternoon with 16-19. Current extended forecast: Tuesday, gusty 24-28; Wednesday, 20-23; Thursday, 12-15. Next weekend: nearing 100F and light wind. Have a great day!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
