Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies continue for the next few days, giving you a chance to get on the river and stay cool. With temps headed back to 90 for the weekend, a nice breeze and some whitecaps will be exactly what you need!

Let’s look at Friday. Surface pressure has been increasing as the inland ridge slowly builds into the PNW from the SW. Partly cloudy sky in the metro area this morning will give just enough edge to the desert heat to keep the wind moving. The day starts with 21-24 from Viento to Swell with 14-17 from Hood River to Mosier and eastward to Arlington. Stevenson: 5-10 to start. Models like the idea of a midday lull, but they also liked that yesterday, and it didn’t happen. Let’s just call it 21-24 all day long from Viento to Hood River (Stevenson joins late morning) with 14-17 at Mosier and decreasing wind east of Mosier. No guarantees on a midday lull, but no surprises if it happens. River flow is 133kcfs at The Dalles, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 86F.

Higher pressure and hotter weather is on tap for Saturday. Marine clouds lessen their influence. This starts the day with 10-13 form Stevenson to Swell with 8-11 near Hood River and light westerlies to the east. The wind holds during the day, which isn’t saying all that much with that little wind! Late in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 to The Dalles and light and variable wind east of The Dalles. High temp for Hood River: 92F.

Sunday, from today’s vantage point, looks slightly windier. Models suggest 13-16 from Viento to Swell through early afternoon. Westerlies build to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles mid to late afternoon. High temp: 91F. The current forecast for the first half of next week, subject to many revisions and changes, is: 20-23 on Monday, 25-28 on Tuesday, and 22-25 on Wednesday. Have a wonderful day!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
