Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A It’s Saturday morning, and models did a giant switcheroo since yesterday afternoon. The latest GFS model run changed the windiest day from Saturday to Sunday. This wasn’t a wee switch. It’s was a giant flip-flop. Looking at the ECMWF, we have equal strength winds both day. So anyway, all that said, we’ll still have powerful westerlies both days to keep the event participants happy.

Early gradients on Saturday of .09 and .07 indicate wind should build all through the Gorge. However, both models suggest the strongest wind will be in the central Gorge this afternoon. Keep the Avery-Rufus stretch as your backup, not your primary. For the morning, we’ll see 14-17ish everywhere. The wind will slowly build to 25-28 from Viento to The Dalles and hold into the evening. 20-24 for Stevenson. Despite the gradients, the models predict 18-22 for Avery to Rufus. One other thing worth noting: 1030mb high pressure offshore should give some added oomph to the wind this afternoon. River flow is 113kcfs and temp is 70 degrees.

The GFS suggests Sunday will be much stronger than Saturday (again, that’s a complete switch from yesterday’s forecast). The Euro says we’ll just have a repeat. One thing’s for sure: lesser marine clouds in the morning and a quicker wind build. So, how about we split the difference: 16-19 early from Viento to Moiser. 25-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles with a chance of “+”.

On to Monday… 18-22 from Viento to Roosevelt to start the day in the wake of a passing shortwave. Desert wind fades during the day and offshore pressure decrease. That leaves the Gorge with 18-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Tuesday starts out with light westerlies and picks up to 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: W5/5-10/30-35, W swell 4′ @ 15 seconds. Sunday: LTW/LTNW/15-20, NW 4′ @ 10 and 3′ @ 14. Monday: NW5/NW10-15/N15-20, W 5′ @ 9. Jones Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: 5-8. Monday: 5-8. Sauvie’s Saturday: 6-9. Sunday: 9-12. Monday: 4-7.

Road and Mountain Biking

Industrial Fire Level is now Level III. Moto is no longer allowed on trails or unimproved roads, including in Post Canyon. Kreps land and SDS lands will close within the next couple of weeks due to fire danger – date is not yet set. Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. Family Man is also closed, as is access to it, meaning you will need to choose other routes to Upper Post. Red Hill Road is theoretically closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Chip sealing will happen on Highway 30 between Mosier and Rowena Crest August 12-14.

All local trails are open – I received confirmation of Huffman Peak too. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
