Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Saturday morning, and we’re off to the races with a weekend of easterlies. You’ll want a nice warm wetsuit for Viento, and you’ll be able to get away with less at Rooster thanks to mixing of warm air from above and downslope heating along the Cascades.
Saturday starts with temps of 50ish near Viento and 65ish near Rooster with pressures of 29.92/30.06 for 0.14 pdx-dls gradient. Morning easterlies will be 30-35 near Rooster and 20-25 near Stevenson and Viento. In the afternoon, the wind drops to 20-25 near Rooster and 15-20 from Stevenson to Viento. River flow readings are 62-84kcfc, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 80F.
Sunday looks nearly identical wind-wise and temp wise. Let’s leave it at that. On Monday, an offshore low drives cooler air into the west side, and the heat low shifts to the east. Unfortunately, that offshore low will keep synoptic-scale gradients small, so we’ll be relying on thermals. Models suggest 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell with light wind farther east.
Not much happens Tuesday and Wednesday. Models hint at a return to westerlies starting Thursday afternoon. NW flow and frontal systems forecast for the weekend (along with much cooler weather) hint at the possibility for stronger westerlies. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Columbia Gorge Marathon is this Sunday. Expect lots of traffic in town and also on the Twin Tunnels trail. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!
Cycling
It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.
The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
