Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of weather systems moving through the area through at least Tuesday make the wind gusty and reliable for the extended period. Saturday morning starts with westerlies at 5-10 through the entire Gorge. With a bit of thermal assistance, the wind will slowly build to 14-17 by noon from Stevenson to The Dalles. An approaching offshore cold front in the afternoon with give a bit of a nudge to the wind; you can expect gusty westerlies at 21-25 from Stevenson to Avery after 2pm.

A wet and strong cold front slams into the area on Sunday morning. Rain starts up around 8am and sticks around all day. Westerlies start out light through the whole Gorge. As the front moves eastward in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 18-22 east of Biggs, remaining light in the rest of the Gorge.

Monday also starts out with light west wind. On and off rain showers stick around in the west all day. Stevenson to Swell stays in the 5-10 range. Mosier to Rufus picks up to gusty 13-16 in the afternoon, and Arlington will likely be 10-13. Next chance for steadier westerlies appears to be Thursday – offshore high pressure combines with inland sunshine for mid-20’s in the afternoon. That’s a long, long ways out, especially in a weather pattern this active, so don’t mark your calendar quite yet.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Saturday: SW10-15/lTW/N10-15, W swell 5′ at 9 seconds. Sunday: SW10-15/SW5-10/SW5-10, W swell 6′ @ 11. Monday: W5-10/W5-10/S10-15, W 7′ @ 12. Jones Saturday-MOnday: nope. Sauvie’s Saturday-Monday: nope.

Road and Mountain Biking

130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in that area will close for logging on Monday, so ride them today. Upper 8 Track in Post Canyon is now closed due to logging. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest and also on Kingsley Road, if you’d like to suffer. As for Kreps/SDS lands… they have remained open all summer, for the first time in a long time! Sounds like moto in Post may reopen at the beginning of next week, depending on how much rain falls over the weekend.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

If you want to give back to trails, there’s a work party on the 170 and 180 meeting at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9am this morning. This work party is intended to extend the 170 (Dirt Surfer) to Kingsley Staging Area. If you bring your moto, you’ll get a one-day waiver to ride after completing the work party. The Special Olympics paper shred day is Saturday at Hood River Rite Aid from 10-2. There’s “Sketchbook Saturdays” a teen drawing meetup, at Dog River Coffee every Saturday from 2 to 4. Rockford Grange has an ice cream social on Sunday at 4:30. Sunday at 9am is the Gorge Kids Triathlon at the Hood River Waterfront Park. Wet.
